On Waiving the Jerusalem Embassy Act (or Not)

By Scott R. Anderson, Yishai Schwartz Thursday, November 30, 2017, 2:50 PM

Tomorrow, the six-month waiver that President Donald Trump issued pursuant to the Jerusalem Embassy Act earlier this year will expire. If and when this happens, certain funding restrictions that are designed to force the United States to relocate its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will snap back into effect. Until recently, Trump had been indicating his intent to extend the waiver for another six months in order to “give [his peace plan] a shot[.]” Yet in the last 24 hours, media outlets have reported that Israeli officials now expect Trump to instead let the waiver expire and announce that the U.S. Embassy is relocating to Jerusalem, possibly in a matter of days. Such reports may be accurate, or they may have been planted by individuals wishing to force the issue through the media. Regardless, the president’s intended path of action remains unknown.

Allowing the waiver to expire would represent a sharp break from past Democratic and Republican administrations, which--despite their own campaign promises and pressure from Congress--have resisted moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem for fear doing so could alienate Arab allies, trigger protests in the Middle East, and damage the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, among other outcomes.

    snip

For its part, Israel contends that its sovereignty extends over all of Jerusalem, which it identifies as its capital. Both the Palestinian Authority and many Arab states, meanwhile, maintain that all of Jerusalem should be subject to permanent status negotiations and that East Jerusalem should be the capital of any future Palestinian state. While positions within the international community vary, most foreign states have--like the United States--declined to take a position on who has sovereignty over Jerusalem and instead favor either negotiations to resolve this issue or international administration. Indeed, when Israel declared Jerusalem its “united and eternal capital” in 1980, it incurred a strong reaction from the U.N. Security Council, which successfully encouraged those countries with embassies in West Jerusalem to relocate them out of the city. Today, no foreign state has its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem…

Trump is 100% correct. The U.S. should have no relationship of any dignity with the madmen and terrorists now in control of Israeli Arabs. We have the power to force the group to respect human rights and Israeli sovereignty, and we should use it.

The last thing Trump did after giving his speech today was to sign the waiver. The US doesn't even have property in Jerusalem on which to construct a new Embassy, much less any architectural plans to build a structure that would be secure in such a provocative location. If our Embassy actually is relocated, it will be many years from now, and Donald Trump won't likely be President any longer.

On a high note it seems Tillerson had the brains to ask Trump to wait a week to beef up embassies in some dangerous areas due to potential embassy attacks. I don't know if Trump listened to him but at least he asked. Not that this is a hint of what to expect if things go very wrong over the US breaking from the world to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital when Palestinian's recognize it as their capital in anticipation of a 2 state solution minus the carrot. So what happens next? We don't know as no asshole President has ever done this for good reason.

So if embassies are attacked who wants to be the first to call for hearings blaming anyone in Trump's administration who may lead in the next election polls. I think it might be me.

The announcement itself is all he needed to destabilize that entire area.

The surface thinkers are easily pleased. Jeez NightSwimmer, I am not sure this country can fix all the damage Trump is doing for many decades. I am not even sure if he is capable of listening to anyone and may spontaneously do this crap on the fly. I can understand he was clueless when he ran and made the promise but I assumed once he took office he would be educated on International issues. The world is just waiting for the next President.
