Shots fired at DMZ as North Korean soldier defects to South

South Korean guards fired warning shots across the heavily militarized border with North Korea on Thursday as a soldier from the North defected in thick fog, complicating efforts to ease tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

A South Korean defense ministry official said up to 20 warning shots were fired as North Korean troops approached too near the “military demarcation line” at the demilitarized zone (DMZ), apparently in search of the missing soldier.

Thursday’s defection came about five weeks after a North Korean soldier suffered critical gunshot wounds during a defection dash across the border.

Two North Korean civilians were also found in a fishing boat on Wednesday and had sought to defect, officials in the South said.

That brings the total number of North Koreans who have defected by taking dangerous routes either directly across the border or by sea to 15 so far this year, including two other soldiers. That is three times the number last year, according to South Korean officials.

Are the floodgates opening? What if people start heading for the DMZ in larger numbers and running across? Once that happened in East Germany it was unstoppable.

That's interesting. Although, the N.Korean people are incredibly brainwashed. I'm not sure enough of them would rebel.

Lots of them just PRETEND to toe the party line, but would defect in a heartbeat if they had the chance.

If they don't SAY the correct things, they could end up in a "re-education camp"...or worse.

While many truly are brainwashed, it's not as many as some would think.

It's not the people who are brainwashed. They've become very westernized. They have to ACT that way around the military, whose presence is everywhere.

Youtube has some great documentaries about the secret life inside of the NK regime. The NK people enjoy our soap oprahs, movies, and south korean tv is the most popular. If you want me to send you the links, I'd be happy to

That's what I think. I'm just imaging what would happen if these two defections become known if it won't trigger a stampede for the borders. Although it could result in KJU bombing SK, too.

Fog, fog is the only reason that soldier made it across.

It's the most well disciplined invasion plan in the history of warfare, at this rate, they'll have 4 million soldiers advance of the dmz in a mere one million years
