Can anyone answer to me why is it perfectly fine that US embassy in Greek Cyprus is in Nicosia when both Greek and Turkish Cyprus claim it for their capital and have it divided to north and south Nicosia, while if the US moves its embassy to west Jerusalem which Israel claims as its capital it is an outrage?
    Thanks from Ian Jeffrey

Israel was created out of Allied sympathies for what happened in WW2. Collective guilt and shame along with no desire to repatriate displaced Jews back into their war ravaged homes led to the creation of a legal basis for Jews to take over Palestine. The Palestinians were cast aside as if they were nothing. The creation of a non-Zionist state in 1948 that wanted to protect existing landowners and give Jews a place to go would have been a solution that could have produced a multi-ethnic state today. But no, Zionism won out, the Palestinians lost but were not completely annihilated, Jews from across the diaspora fled into the region and bit by bit, violence dominated the area. Now we have a cluster, this is not going to end ever. All that Bibi and Trump are doing is poking the hornets nest and then complaining about getting stung. Rocks against bullets.

    A little background:

Today, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, West Jerusalem was among the areas captured and later annexed by Israel while East Jerusalem, including the Old City, was captured and later annexed by Jordan. Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War and subsequently annexed it into Jerusalem, together with additional surrounding territory.[note 6] One of Israel's Basic Laws, the 1980 Jerusalem Law, refers to Jerusalem as the country's undivided capital. All branches of the Israeli government are located in Jerusalem, including the Knesset (Israel's parliament), the residences of the Prime Minister (Beit Aghion) and President (Beit HaNassi), and the Supreme Court. Whilst the international community rejected the annexation as illegal and treats East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory occupied by Israel,[32][33][34][35] Israel has a stronger claim to sovereignty over West Jerusalem.[36][37] Wikipedia
Under the United Nations partition plan of 1947 to create a Jewish state and an Arab state from Mandatory Palestine, Jerusalem, with its holy sites, was designated as a “corpus separatum” — a separate, international entity under the auspices of the United Nations. Zionist forces conquered West Jerusalem during the 1948 war, after five Arab armies attacked the newly declared state. The Arab, eastern part of the city came under Jordanian control.

West Jerusalem, which had been under siege during the hostilities, was not set up to serve as a capital and remained a relative backwater. There was no mention of Jerusalem in the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel signed by the state’s founders on May 14, 1948, in the old Tel Aviv Museum.

David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel, instructed Parliament to transfer its operations to Jerusalem only in December 1949, after the General Assembly of the United Nations began debating how to carry out its partition plan. Citing 3,000 years of Jewish history in the city, Mr. Ben-Gurion declared Jerusalem to be an inseparable part of the State of Israel and its eternal capital.

    snip

After Israel captured East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, it vastly expanded the city boundaries and set about building huge Jewish housing developments in the newly won territory, which most of the world considers occupied. About 200,000 Israeli Jews now live in those neighborhoods, or settlements, among at least 320,000 Palestinians.
