Actually I need two letters from two separate qualified (cisgender) individuals.

Several years ago, I was a consultant to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the time, it operated what was labelled as a "sex identification clinic". Unfortunately, it is on the opposite coast, but they might be able to supply information on west coast resources.

Erica told BuzzFeed News that Corey was always feminine, even from the time she was very young. “She loved to dress in high heels and dresses. In public she wore boy clothes — I just assumed she might be gay.”

When Corey was in the fifth grade she was bullied so badly her mother made the decision to pull her out of public school and begin homeschooling. It wasn’t until Corey was 11 years old that the mother-daughter duo came across a video of transgender YouTuber Jazz Jennings and everything suddenly clicked. “She said, ‘Mom, I’m just like her, I AM a girl.’”

Being transgender is not necessarily genetic. The theory I'm most familiar with describes that unexpected changes in the hormone levels of a mother at different stages of pregnancy that can allow the baby to develop male organs and yet have brains that are structured more like females, and can lead to self-identification with a gender that doesn't match their outward body, or they can be born with indeterminate sex organs. This page is long and packed with information about gender identity and genetics, with evidence given both for and against measurable brain differences in transgender/transsexuals, but it's very well-sourced at the bottom.

It’s common to hear the phrase “all babies start out female, and it’s only later that they become male,” and this is at least partially true. In fact, the influence of testosterone on a fetus has been described as a defeminization process, changing a fetus which was essentially predestined to be female into male. (Gooren, 2006) Testosterone production and the conversion of some testosterone to dihydrotestosterone between weeks 6 and 12 of pregnancy is critical for the initial development of male features, such as the penis, prostate gland, and scrotum. (Bao) In the absence of these male hormones, female genitalia develop instead. Brain development, however, does not occur in earnest until the second half of the pregnancy term, after the genitals have been developed, and the continued presence of male hormones results in a brain which has subtle, but critical physical differences from the female brain. They get an operation that assigns them whatever gender the doctor thinks will fit them best (physically). It happens all the time, to this day.

    1. I simply meant before they could say "XX chromosome...means it's a boy...even if it has a vagina beneath its penis".

    2. Yes, in the "Old Days" the doctors would simply decide what gender to assign hermaphodites....likely "female" by castrating the penis. And the child would grow up (and be treated as) a girl then a woman. But again, that flies in the face of the anti-transgender folks who say "There is no 'grey area'....you're either a boy or a girl at birth".

    3. Yes, I remember the "all animals are originally female"...from "Jurassic Park".

When I first joined this site, there was a transgendered poster here. She took a lot of shit from a few people, but gained a lot of respect from a lot of others. I really miss Mare Tranquility and wish she would show up again.

She's the one who enlightened me to the whole chromosome thing. Just a couple of weeks ago, Real Sports did a segment on this. Some poor woman in India was banned from competing in track because she has unacceptable testosterone levels. Ridiculous.

We always think gender is a black and white issue, but it's not. And the one place we really see it get complicated is in sports.

Me too. She inspired me a lot, actually. Last I knew she and her wife were having financial issues and she said they might have to move. I've been trying to track her down ever since.. :/

I met her on another forum, and I might have even given her the link to PH and invited her to post here. It was a long time ago.

Some people born "intersex" are less female thinking and looking that just plain transgendered women.

It all comes down to presentation and soul.

    and politeness from your part.
