    Got Privilege?

EDITORIAL: What I Said When My White Friend Asked for My Black Opinion on White Privilege

Yes, such a site is needed. No, it's not racist. Yes, it would be racist if someone did it with the word "Black" replaced with "White".

    Mr. Amelia,

Thanks. I always knew this white privilege thing was just a load of crap.

    Good read. Thank you.

Probably goes without saying, but this is a touchy subject - and I don't just mean race, but the concept of "white privilege". For many that is a relatively new phrase. (I think the first time I heard it was two years ago.) Not only is it "new," but it is often used in connection with an already uncomfortable (if not heated) situation/discussion, and is often perceived as an accusation. Which it is, in a sense. But, say you're someone like Lori Hutcherson's classmate Jason - say you're someone who, at least consciously, has always attempted to treat others with respect and NOT judge them by the color of their skin. When met with the assertion that you have this...thing...which you never previously knew existed and never sought, but that the mere fact that you have it is, frankly, a negative, well...that can be a bit disconcerting to say the least. In fact, one could contend that it's almost the mirror image of what Ms. Hutcherson described having experienced in several examples, only contending so would probably, in itself, be viewed as exercising that very privilege you never asked for, didn't earn and didn't know until recently existed. The point I'm trying to make, though, is that there are times when people are faced with unfair treatment, pre-judgment and negative assumptions through zero fault of their own. And this can, understandably, prompt a defensive posture in response. So we end up with people who feel hurt and defensive engaging with others who feel hurt and defensive, and that can often lead to misunderstandings and mistrust, rather than serving a productive purpose.

What I love about this piece is that Ms. Hutcherson saw that her classmate's inquiry was well-intended and met it head on. She could have found his query offensive and taken issue with it. Or she could have decided there was no "safe" way to answer without making him or others uncomfortable and opted not to. Instead, she saw it for what it was and took the opportunity to share her perspective and shed some much needed light on the topic. Her examples were great illustrations of the concept and helped me to see it more clearly, and that's something I'll take with me.

I wonder if the people who need to read the editorial in the OP most will actually bother. But just in case some of you who need to happen to wander in here at least read this:

    9. On my very first date with my now husband, I climbed into his car and saw baby wipes on the passenger side floor. He said he didn’t have kids, they were just there to clean up messes in the car. I twisted to secure my seatbelt and saw a stuffed animal in the rear window. I gave him a look. He said “I promise, I don’t have kids. That’s only there so I don’t get stopped by the police.” He then told me that when he drove home from work late at night, he was getting stopped by cops constantly because he was a black man in a luxury car and they assumed it was either stolen or he was a drug dealer. When he told a cop friend about this, he told Warren to put a stuffed animal in the rear window because it would change “his profile” to that of a family man and he was much less likely to be stopped. The point here is, if you’ve never had to mask the fruits of your success with a floppy-eared, stuffed bunny rabbit so you won’t get harassed by the cops on the way home from your gainful employment (or never had a first date start this way), you have white privilege.

I can see, and, have always acknowledged that most African Americans have been the blunt of both subtle and, not so subtle Racism.

However. We can't keep living with the transgressions of the past.

By the same token, I have family, that, in no way have experienced any "privilege." THEIR Pale, White Skin hasn't opened doors for them.

And, finally.....other than "talking about it," what do we do about "White Privilege?"

Let's just say my son's best friend could probably really related to the editorial piece.
