    Real Monsters In Law

The parents of a 33-year-old man flew from India to Florida to beat his wife after he told them she was disobedient, police said.

Devbir Kalsi was arrested Saturday along with his parents Jasbir and Bhupinder Kalsi, after deputies found his wife Silky Gaind severely bruised all over her body.

Gaind was beaten, held against her will, and on one occasion, threatened with a kitchen knife by her 67-year-old father-in-law, according to the arrest report cited by WUSA.

Kalsi asked his parents to help “counsel and discipline” his wife for being disobedient, and the Indian nationals flew to their Riverview home outside Tampa, with police saying the abuse had been going on for "an extended period of time."

This just grabbed me wrong I guess. I can see where it is hard for my local police to protect girls in families that have immigrated here from a third world country against the risk that their parents will take them back to the "old country" for a "vacation" and then force them into underage marriage or worse. After all, the jurisdiction issues alone give me a headache, and they cannot have responsibility for anyone who has ever lived in Cleveland, worldwide.

    That's just not do-able.

But THIS! To bring the parents or grandparents from India to the US so as to commit violent crimes against a immigrant here! That is not a threat I admit I ever considered.

The arrogance just makes my teeth ache. This family was happy for the couple to move to the US and take advantage of the economic opportunities that meant, but absolutely no desire to change their conduct so they are not breaking US laws against certain kinds of violence, etc.

At least the cops took the victim's complaint and acted properly to arrest these nightmare in-laws. Good on them.

Beating a grown woman because she was "disobedient" to her husband! The fucking sexism alone makes me see red.

(My ex-MIL would have fit right in with these three, the old shrew.)

    Your thoughts?

NO SHIT! You want to move house to a country halfway around the globe. Don't you make reasonable inquiry as to their laws, etc. before deciding, finally, to do this?

This is hardly similar to a college kid on a foreign exchange for 6 months, who naively thinks it doesn't matter, e.g., Amanda Knox.

Surely the upper classes in India have a clue that SOME of their customs are illegal in the US?
