But it doesn't always work out that way.

When asked to stand and support liberty and justice for all, his son sat on his hands.

Just the opposite, dude. You think people in North Korea are allowed to refuse to pledge allegiance to their flag?

LOL, I've always thought saying it every day was weird. Like there's an expiration date or something. It shows very little trust in our children.

Even elected government officials only have to take an oath once. Same with getting married.

Imagine having to repeat your wedding vows every single day.

Honestly, not a bad idea, that. So many people have a hard time keeping those vows once they've made them.

It's good to have rituals that remind us what we're about. I don't know if the pledge is a necessary part of morning school rituals, but having rituals is a good thing.

He knows what it means. He just does not believe in it for other people.

He does, to the best of my knowledge. But he doesn't consider the United States to be a "nation under God." When you recite an oath of allegiance, you're accepting the whole parcel. Not just the bits you like.

The "justice for all" part is kinda dicey too--just boasting, really.

I stopped saying the Pledge for a while in sixth grade. Other kids told me to watch out, but nothing happened. I did stand--figured that alone didn't implicate me in anything. Even the occasional foreign exchange student or resident foreign national kid did that much.
