Not very much, and not very well.

You'd be surprised by the number (percentage) of students who think the Civil War happened in the 1960's. They get it confused with the Civil Rights Struggle. Learning DATES, of almost anything, has been very much de-emphasized. It's child abuse, don't you know, to make kids memorize stuff anymore. So, no more memorizing all fifty states, let alone all fifty state capitols, like you and I were no doubt expected to. No more memorizing the Gettysburg Address, or that the Magna Carta happened in 1215, or that the Declaration of Independence happened in 1776, or that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred and ninety-two. Just cruel to inflict all that on our precious kids.

A recent poll said that only a SMALL percentage of millennials had ever heard of Auschwitz...........I think it was 18%.

No wonder more and more people think we never went to the Moon. No wonder 20% of American adults think the Sun revolves around the Earth. Ignorance in America is spreading like a cancer.

They are not dumb kids and grew up in a house with a father who's a WWII buff!

(of course they never listened to me anyway so there is that)

My DEA war stories clears the room very quickly! lol
Just tell them ww2 is the war where Ben Afleck shot down Zeros at Pearl and then he fought at the Battle of Britain and then he bombed Tokyo with Doolittle.

I wouldn't even get to the part about Ben Afleck before they'd be gone!

That sort of display should be encouraged. That way, we'll readily identify who the racists are. As it is, they hide behind a veneer of respectability and claim to be other than what they really are.

Honestly? That guy acted drunk as shit if you ask me. The reporter was stupid for putting a microphone in front of him. The woman knew what she was saying. She's fair game.

Leno never asked the year the Magna Carta was published or when North Dakota became a state. He would ask what country we fought in the Revolutionary War, to name the current vice president or how many stars are on the American flag. And yet adults had no idea.

I remember watching one of those 'Jay-Walks' from the late 1990's. The question Jay was asking that particular day was this: Who was President before Bill Clinton? And, oh my! The wacky answers he was getting! One person's guess was JFK. Another person figured it had to be Dwight D. Eisenhower. Yet another person was POSITIVE it was Ronald Reagan. He finally talked to a person who took a 'wild guess' and thought it was FDR. Jay asked that person what he did for a living. Guy said he was a teacher. Jay laughed. Asked the guy what subject he taught. 'History' was the answer. Jay wasn't even laughing any more after that. He was closer to weeping.

As was I. As was I.
