    Russia’s Crackdown on Jehovah’s Witnesses

The men who stormed into the hall were armed with handguns and clad in masks and bullet proof vests, as if prepared for a shootout. Inside, several dozen worshipers, many of whom were children or elderly, were in the midst of a Bible reading.

The raid, led by the police and Federal Security Services (FSB) officers last May in Oryol, targeted the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a Christian denomination known for its strict interpretation of the Bible. A month earlier, a Supreme Court decision had declared it an extremist group, putting it on par with violent terrorist organizations like Islamic State.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses in recent years had increasingly come under the authorities’ spotlight. Analysts told The Moscow Times that the group had been swept up in Russia’s drive to reign in minority religious groups that rival the Orthodox Church and oppose President Vladimir Putin’s militaristic brand of patriotism.

But the crackdown on the Jehovah’s Witnesses, analysts said, did not take off in earnest until the raid in Oryol. It marked the first arrest following the Supreme Court ruling, notably of a Danish citizen, Dennis Christensen, who had been leading the Bible reading that late spring evening.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses cult should be outlawed. They are a danger to society.

I don't really see how they're more of a threat to our society than is mainstream Christianity... Or Buddhism, for that matter.

They are the reason I was forced to leave home at 15 years old.
They also will hide child molesters and wife beaters from law enforcement.
Yes, they are much more dangerous than credible religions.

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. Still, individual congregations can't be presumed to represent an entire denomination. If so, then all denominations would be guilty.

The mainstream Orthodox Church is much more of a cult over there...

Patriarch Kirill... Yeah, not creepy at all, right there... lol

A much bigger, wealthier, and more powerful cult than JWs could ever hope to be

    Thanks from Friday13

No, it's all of them. They are rotten all the way through.

Well, I certainly have no personal obligation to defend them. I've known a few people over the years who were part of the church, but neither myself nor my family has been.

Maybe in America. The Russian ones are folks who had to survive some pretty nasty persecution back in the Soviet era, and are now back under threat... Have some compassion.

I have known a few JW even had neighbors that were JW. I told them straight I wasn’t going to convert and not to waste their energy. They never discussed religion after the first mention of it and they turned out to be great neighbors.
