CHP Arrested Riverside Preacher For Reading Bible In Public

“This is an abuse of power on the part of the CHP,” said Jennifer Monk, Associate General Counsel for Advocates for Faith & Freedom. “The arresting officer could find no appropriate penal code to use when arresting these men. The purpose of the arrests appears to have been to censor them.”

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Lawyers for leaders of a Hemet church say their constitutional rights were violated when police arrested three men for reading aloud from a Bible outside a local Department of Motor Vehicles office.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court, attorneys from Advocates for Faith & Freedom say an assistant pastor and two elders from Calvary Chapel Hemet reportedly went to the DMV on Feb. 2 before the office opened for business hours when one of the men began to read passages from the Bible.
Shortly after, a security guard approached Mark Mackey and instructed him to stop reading and leave the premises. The men say they had a First Amendment right to free speech, claiming that they were standing on public property and not interfering with any DMV business.
Approximately ten minutes later, a California Highway Patrolman approached Mr. Mackey as he read, took the Bible out of his hands, and arrested him for “impeding an open business” under Penal Code Section 602.1(b).
“This is an abuse of power on the part of the CHP,” said Jennifer Monk, Associate General Counsel for Advocates for Faith & Freedom. “The arresting officer could find no appropriate penal code to use when arresting these men. The purpose of the arrests appears to have been to censor them.”
The legal group has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the men — who were subsequently released after their arrests — for violation of their right to free speech and for unlawful arrest.
You can read a copy of the complaint here, and check out edited video footage of the incident posted on YouTube.

They broke the law and refused to co operate when given the chance. They should be arrested. Your Muslim reference has nothing to do with these men breaking the law.

In Chicago.....think cops got time to be arresting people reading bibles out in public.. One would think the cops out in California would be worried about crime, shootings, gangbanging, and of course all those illlegal drugs and illegal immigants out there in californification.

Tho according to what the AP states looks like it is a civil rights violation. Of Course with California they seem to have a problem when it comes down to people advocating their religious beliefs in any sort of way, publicly......

If it violates the law by impeding business, yes.

I'm not trying to tell you what to think. I do believe you are manufacturing an issue that doesn't apply.

Jay walking is a 75 dollar fine in California......but here it looks like the cops arrested them for a minor misdemenaor Charge.
I can see where you were going with the Muslim deal WR. But I got a better one for you.....think if it was 3 gangbangers rapping, think the security guard would have said anything to them? Think some CHPs would open their mouths to a bunch of bangers. Highly unlikey. So I can see where cops would take liberties feeling it is safe to do so against some Christians.

Of Course your Muslim reference does not have anything to do with the AP. But in retrospect where the sheep tremble, including those with badges. One would think they would apply that law equally. But they way things are now in the Country. I doubt they would have arrested them if they were Muslim for fear of racial profiling.

Fair question there WR......again in a country where sheep think they can lead and decide what a person thinks lmao!!!!!
