So... it was a drug screening?

Or, do you mean testing you for genetic markers that are associated with higher risks of drug abuse or drug sensitivities?

Why is it called DNA? Are they testing your DNA for drugs or something?

I don't know much about drug screens, but if he was just trying to rule you out as a doctor jumping junkie looking for pain meds, then good for him.

So you're okay with the cost of medical care going up as a result of running these sorts of tests designed for someone suffering from a painful condition being treated like a possible addict?

I am. Sassy didn't answer the question about whether or not she had a history with this doctor, but it sounds to me like, no, it was a first visit, and she was asking for an addictive drug scrip.

Asking your regular doctor, who knows you, for a scrip, is one thing. Asking a doc who doesn't have a history with you is bound to raise reg flags. Prescription drug addiction is a big deal, and I'd guess runs up the cost of health care. Also, Texas appears to have a new law cracking down on doctor shopping and pill mills, so that's probably a factor, too:

Texas readies a new weapon against 'doctor shopping' for prescription drugs

I think the question that needs to be asked is why do so many people feel the need to medicate themselves in a society where we are constantly told how lucky we are?

I think it would ultimately lead to lower costs.

My aunt about killed herself because she found enough doctors to keep loading her up with pain killers. That resulted in a trip to the ER, an extended hospital stay, pyschological treatment, etc.....

    Guess which one costs more?

Maybe your only two adult kids dying within 18 months of each other?

Probably a lot of different reasons.
