Sure, that's why you pick examples of Jones fake news, get shown the evidence and then change the subject REAL quick.

Anyway, there have been so many examples of media making outright verifiably false information. And you know the best and most flagrant examples.

It's actually something of a joke that you trust those that lie most flagrantly. Alex Jones might get stuff wrong (I don't agree with him on all either), but he's got a better overall than CNN, especially if you look at the past 3 years.

Yes... But, now, it's happening. It took 20-50 years (maybe more) but now,not he truth is coming to light.

Tell me, did you read what was declassified about JFK assassination?

Shot front and back, head and throat.

It's becoming conspiracy fact. Hell, even to live your life, you believe that trump conspired with Russians to overthrow your elections.

My point was this, for example:

I don't ever remember identifying fake news as being a subject that needed to be taught, but more and more schools are introducing it.

And yes, the social media is a lot to blame. No matter how wingnutty a point of view you want to have, you can find sources and fellow wingnuts that will offer that and support it.
Has the danger of politicians and media distorting the truth or outright lying NOT existed before? My take is that is always has, but only now we feel the need to have university courses that teach us to identify the lies, hold conferences on the same subject, establishing agencies that "combat disinformation" and what not. People have always lied and been lied to, though.

I don't know if I agree that people are more polarized now.

That is an interesting perspective, although I'm not sure I'd say it that way. If it is true and kooks have entered the mainstream, then why? I wonder if it is related to what RNG said earlier and the sheer volume of information (and "information") that we receive every day nowadays makes us less equipped to discern lies and distortions. And I agree, of course, that it is much easier to find support for any point of view, no matter how deranged, than 20 years ago. Then again, people have always believed crazy things, and some of those things used to be mainstream and now they aren't. Progress!

All of this still doesn't change my opinion that there's no need to invent a new term and pretend we are facing something new here. My objection is not linguistic, there have always been tons of new words emerging, many of them "unnecessary," it has to do with the concept. I'd just say, "The 21st century makes it now much easier for us to be bombarded by bullshit, just like it is now much easier to find valuable information." Just like it is easier to die in a plane crash / travel long distance than it was in 1918. Use your brain, like you should always have, that's all.

Facebook is NOT a news supplier.
I had to curtail conversation with a conservative friend during the election and even now a little because she, kept espouse about fake news found on consevative sites. It was just hack peice of Hillary being criminal, assasian, crooked.
Yet, I hear Hillary and Bill are living large.
The endless news about Trump is disgusting, the childish tweets, his appointments who were unqualified are failing, shall I go on......

News (real and fake) travel faster nowadays, yes, but 1) that doesn't change the nature of their content, and 2) unless I'm missing something huge (entirely possible with someone to whom PH is the closest thing to "social media" she uses), they don't travel THAT faster than, say, 5 or even 10 years ago when no one seemed that terrified and perplexed by the fact that people sometimes say and share things that aren't true.
And it's not that hard to tell. One source and it's a little too good to be true? Probably isn't.

Just had a thought. ( watching "mission to Mars " )
We should pick a neutral nation safe from religious extremist and most foreseeable natural calamities.
On this spot, construct a giant human face which stares at the heavens. This face will be a building built to last forever and house the human or planet history as we know so far. It could house replicas of Art and trinkets that followed the Evoulutionary path of man.

Tourist would pay to visit, an endless stream of firs timers.

The indigenous peoples of that area might object to your hacking away at Uluru. I know there are laws against it.
