Cruz praises Trumps debate performance, offers to coach for next debate

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) praised Donald Trump's performance at the first presidential debate in an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday morning. Cruz also offered to help Trump prepare for future debates.

"I thought Donald had the strongest debate performance he’s had in this election cycle," Cruz said on Hewitt's nationally syndicated morning radio program. "I think he really went after Hillary, which was a good thing. And I think he drew strong contrast, particularly on taxes, and on regulation and on law and order, and on the disastrous Iran deal. And so I thought it was a good debate night."

Cruz is trying to salvage his obvious bid to run again in 2020.

He figured out (obviously a few weeks back) that he CANNOT win the GOP Nomination in 4 years if a lot of Trumpsters think that "Trump lost because RINO/Establishment types like Cruz didn't fully support him." (this being a line that Limbaugh, but especially "Lumpy the Long Island Ninja" (Hannity) said they'd push "if" Trump lost.)

So he endorses Trump...and now says he wants to "help Trump for his next debate".

The whole idea is to convince Cruz-hating Trumpsters that "I'm on your side now...I love The Donald".....so they won't reject him outright when he runs in 2020.

Cruz certainly came around quick. Suspect he is concerned about his re-election..

No, a dead road-kill armadillo who had the GOP Nomination?....would get elected in TEXAS.

It's about 2020. Cruz sees Trump losing and 2020 being open. But he stands NO shot if he was seen by the Trump Cult within the GOP Base as "the guy who cost Trump the election by not endorsing him."

It's a stupid argument and a silly argument....but these are stupid and silly people Cruz has to deal with.

If Trump did so well, why does he need help for the next debate?

Cruz could have come out of this looking like the guy who stuck up for something.
Instead, he now looks like just another sell out.

A couple of principled conservatives have cried on my shoulder (figuratively) over this. They thought Cruz a hero for his stand at the convention. I even admired him a bit for it. But I also suspected that it was part of a bigger picture, the latest step in a career that makes Cruz an awfully cynical guy who is willing to alter his principles (usually in the name of Christian "forgiveness," which is even worse) at will if he stands to benefit.

That Cruz found anything at all to praise in this flowery language shows he's thinking about numero uno. If Trump loses, he's gotta get re-elected in 2018, with local GOP support not embittered over him having hamstrung the nominee. And then the sky's the limit... If Trump wins, Cruz can make a major play for a cabinet post or simply Senate leadership.

Trump would be stupid not to take up an expert debater on such an offer. But, then again, Trump is stupid on many things.

I think a lot of those not up for re-election this time around can hedge their bets. If Trump wins, they look great. If he loses, the hope is they will be considered a "team player."
