Republicans ready to launch wide-ranging probe of Russia, despite Trump’s stance

    Very unexpected.

Apparently Trump has a lot of work still to do with republicans.

Leading*Senate Republicans are preparing to launch a coordinated and wide-ranging probe into*Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. elections and its potential cyber threats to the *military, digging deep into*what they view as corrosive interference in the nation’s*institutions.

Such an aggressive approach puts them on a direct collision course with President-elect Donald Trump, who downplays the possibility*Russia had any role in the November elections*— arguing that a hack of the Democratic National Committee emails*may have been perpetrated by “some guy in his home in New Jersey.”

The fracture could become more prominent*after Trump is inaugurated and begins setting*foreign policy. He has already indicated the country should “get along” with Russia since the two nations have many common strategic goals.

Its possible they are doing this just to get rid of this accusation. They could say they investigated and found nothing.

On the other hand, it could be in defiance of Trump also which would signal that Trump doesn't necessarily have congress on his side.

So you don't think they are going to do 9 different investigations and try and carry it in the news for four years costing the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars?

I read this earlier - good for them!!!

But you do know that several members here don't believe that Russia had anything to do with meddling in the election.

This story is really going to bum them out

And Trump too - I think even yesterday he said he didn't believe our national security experts on this subject. It's some fat guy in his Mom's basement - lol.

But some of Trump’s would-be Republican allies on Capitol Hill disagree. Senate Armed Services Chair John McCain (Ariz.) is readying a probe of possible Russian cyber incursions into U.S. weapons systems, and said he has been discussing the issue with Select Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr (N.C.) with whom he will be “working closely” to investigate Russia’s suspected interference in the U.S. elections, cyber threats to the military and other institutions. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been apprised of the discussions. Burr did not respond to requests for comment.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) also said he intends to hold hearings next year into alleged Russian hacking. Corker is on Trump’s shortlist for secretary of state, according to the Trump transition team.

They aren't going to find "nothing" -

Joint Statement from the Department of Homeland Security
and Office of the Director of National Intelligence
    on Election Security

The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations. The recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscow—the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europe and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these activitie

I don't think they did, other than social media stuff maybe, but actual tampering?

    I doubt it.

If this is serious and they do find something it will be unprecedented because it would have to go to the Court for judgement, re-election maybe, would pence get the presidency? There are no rules for what to do if you find proof of a foreign government tampering with our elections. It would invalidate anything Trump has done in the role of the president, talk about a complete mess.

So are you saying you don't believe the CIA and Homeland Security? You don't believe Burr/ Corker/Graham?

“I’m going after Russia in every way you can go after Russia. I think they’re one of the most destabilizing influences on the world stage. I think they did interfere with our elections and I want Putin personally to pay the price,” Graham said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday"

I have no idea if the find concrete evidence what that would do with the election results.

But it is serious matter and I'm glad some GOP Senators have stepped up to the plate. The hacking of the DNC emails by Russia was unprecedented.

Maybe they are wondering if the Russians tampered with their primaries.

Influencing an election through public opinion is far different than rigging an election. America does the same thing with many other foreign nations, you will often see us supporting one side over the other.
