BREAKING: Mike Pence will break tie to confirm Betsy DeVos

Ultimately not surprised. By forcing this situation, Collins and Murkowski have made themselves persona non grata in the Trump administration. Any priorities they have will most likely be ignored by the president, and he'll probably tweet nasty things about them from time to time.

We are too early in this administration for Senators to be willing to take that kind of burden onto themselves. They were elected to advance their voters' interests on other issues and if they want to do that effectively, they need to have a foot in the White House's door.

But boy, this gave McConnell the willies. And if DeVos pushes her policy proposals into DoE unbridled, with no concern at all for how she was almost denied the job, and promptly fucks up as I believe she will — that confirmation hearing showed her to be truly and objectively lacking in knowledge about what the federal government does vis-ŗ-vis education, what it is required BY LAW, unalterably, to do — then it'll be Trump and McConnell's bag to hold.

For history nerds out there: No Vice President has ever had to break a Senate tie on confirmation (largely because you needed 60 ayes to get them through until Reid nuked the rules) and the last VP to break a tie for any reason was Dick Cheney.

I'm hoping another republican or two will have the balls to step forward and say no. I won't hold my breath though.

And Pence would be giddy to break the tie. He's a religious nut ball just like her.

this woman is pathetically unqualified. It's absurd that the vote is this close.

The votes are in. Tillis indicated this morning that he would be willing to consider abstention and then said nothing else. McConnell owes some people some favors. No Majority Leader wants to have to whip their caucus this hard this early in the Congress — this is not the House of Representatives.

Pyrrhic victories are not a good thing. If DeVos starts ignoring key DoE responsibilities required by law, such as the enforcement of disability protections in schools that she indicated she didn't understand during confirmation, this will cost the Trump administration more than it was worth.

I suspect it will just mean more law suits and maybe even the nonbelievers will see how incompetent she is.

This is a really good day for the country. Now we can get rid of common core and give parents more school choices.
