They deep-scanned the doctor's hard drive, examining what's called unallocated space on the disk. The techs found something interesting in that space: an image file. They decided it was child pornography and alerted the FBI.
Why were they looking at image files on this computer? When someone hires a plumber, they don't expect him to snoop around the house.

My son, smartest kid in the world, couldn't boot onto his computer. Yelling and screaming about it. I asked did you you try this, that and the other thing? He said he tried everything. I said OK. I then went on line and found that there was a different method to be used to get into safe mode on Windows Ten. I asked him if he tried that and he said no. I said, "well let's try it". Guess what? 2 hours later after going through scan disk and repair it was back up and running. I'm 54, know very little about computers, was able to figure out. Stay calm is my philosophy in these type of situations.

Not everyone is computer savvy. Just like not everyone can do home repairs, fix their car, set up their own retirement account, or any number of other tasks. So sometimes we hire someone to do these things for us and we shouldn't have to be subject to invasions of privacy when we do.

Very true. If however, you hire a plumber and they happen to observe a brick of cocaine in the tank of the toilet, there would be some obligation to call the police. If the Geek Squad were to discover illegal material when say, cleaning up viruses on a hard drive, reporting it would be expected but to search for it? I think that may cross a line.

You mean the land of the "newly wed and nearly dead"? Yeah, I wonder why I've stayed all these years (and came back twice). But it's cheaper (used to be CHEAP) and its warm and the ocean is about a mile away (as the seagulls fly).

Can you imagine how many times cons call the cops
to report the SNAP cheater in the grocery line?
Or how about reporting the suspected illegal alien? Cons see
    them everywhere!! LOL
The issue here is the fact that the Best Buy guys were digging more deeply than they needed to. At the request of the FBI.

That's a warrantless search as far as I can see.

That's why I don't ever use those guts for any repairs, I just have a guy, Russian dude, he got his own computer chop shop, does whatever I need for me, for cash, nice and quick, no problem.

Not that I have anything to hide on my devices lol But, still.

Apparently the CIA could have already been in your computer before the FBI. And those are the "legal" intruders.

You'll always know if you're being surveilled by the CIA. Just look for the tell-tale cameras inside your microwave oven.

    Did you find one there?
