It's terrible when someone manipulates the public and tricks them into listening to them, isn't?
What happens when a candidate with a penchant for manipulating the news media touts a "big announcement" that may or may not address his racist birther campaign at his new hotel in Washington, D.C.? If you’re Donald Trump, TV networks flock to cover the event, spend an hour hyping it and provide what is essentially 30 minutes of free advertisement for your campaign.
That’s what happened Friday, when rumors circulated that Trump was slated to speak at Trump International Hotel and address his six-year campaign to delegitimize America's first black president. When the GOP presidential nominee finally took the stage, it was clear what the event was really about: himself.
“This is our brand-new ballroom,” Trump began. “You only see a small piece of it because we have it broken down but this is—the hotel is completed. We’ll be having our opening ceremony in October and it’s gonna be something very special.”
Trump continued touting his hotel for several minutes, speaking about the “tremendous amounts of work and energy and money” that went into building it, and adding, unsurprisingly, that it will be “the best hotel in Washington.”
Trump then invited several medal of honor recipients to heap praise on himself, and without fail, the TV networks covered every self-congratulatory moment of it.
Political journalists on Twitter took serious issue with the gross negligence exhibited by TV networks in covering what was essentially a Trump hotel opening.
