Snapchat is king among teens as Facebook declines in popularity, survey shows

Move over Instagram, Twitter and Facebook: When it comes to social platforms, Snapchat continues to rule among teens, according to a new Piper Jaffray survey.

The firm's "Taking Stock With Teens" biannual report received 10,000 responses for its fall 2016 edition, with the respondent's average age 16-years-old. It asked survey takers about fashion and beauty, restaurants and media and device preferences.

Eighty percent said they used Snapchat at least once per month and 35 percent said it was their favorite platform. Snapchat became the most popular app among the age group in last spring's survey, unseating Instagram.

Meanwhile, Facebook saw the largest decline in usage this time. While 60 percent of teens said they used it at least one a month earlier this year, only 52 percent said they were logging in monthly in the new survey. The rates were dragged down by most by the youngest survey takers. Facebook also decreased in popularity from 15 percent in the spring survey who said it was their favorite platform to 13 percent in the latest survey.....

Facebook Users Are Sharing Fewer Personal Updates and It’s a Big Problem

    Erin Griffith
    Apr 07, 2016

If you haven’t posted anything personal on Facebook (FB, -0.08%) in awhile, you’re not alone. A damning report published by The Information on Thursday revealed that Facebook has been struggling to reverse a 21% decline in “original sharing,” or personal updates, from its 1.6 billion monthly active users.

This indicates a key vulnerability for the social behemoth, and failed attempts to address it reflect a point I made in a recent column: There's no guarantee that Facebook's current winning streak can last.

Facebook’s decline in personal updates reflects a common growing pain for online communities. What starts out as as special and intimate place to share things grows into a big, impersonal, and professional platform. Some online communities try to preserve the special and intimate at the expense of adding new users. (Consider communities like Reddit: thriving, but never quite crossing over into the mainstream.) Others crumble once they do reach the mainstream, causing users to abandon the service for the latest new thing that feels more special and intimate. (There are a litany of examples: Myspace, Bebo, Flickr, Orkut, LiveJournal, Friendster.)

    Facebook absolutely is in decline.

Facebook Users Posted A Third Less Content In 2016 Than In 2015

Looking through 25 million user-generated Facebook posts, as social marketers Mavrck have done, some interesting - and worrying - trends emerge. The first one that jumped out was a further - and accelerating it seems -double-digit decline regarding original content posted by regular Facebook users - 29.49% to be exact. The average Facebook users is less personally engaged with the platform than the year before - this context crisis is not new but it does not appear to be getting better either.

Despite this it seems that Facebook has gotten back its mojo when it comes to News Feed engagement in general - between September 2015 and March 2016 it reversed a seven-month decline due to multiple algorithm changes (video up weighted and user postings up weighted). The research seems to point to a world where less ads are better for Facebook and yet Marketers cannot spend enough on the platform. There may be trouble ahead - especially if Facebook continues to max out of spaces to put ads.....

I have both children and theater people whom I stay in contact with through facebook.

About 90% of my facebook friends are more liberal than I was.

After the election it was a whole lotta self restraint to not comment on the tsunami of Trump bashing.

Fortunately, nobody outed me as a Republican.

FB is for pictures of grandkids, not politics.
