Exactly. The bottom line is that if two other people walked into the bakery and place an identical order, and the baker is willing to serve one couple, but not the other, then it's discriminatory.

If the baker doesn't want to stock same-sex cake figurines, that's fine. The baker can say "I'm glad to make the cake, but I don't stock same-sex figurines." That's permissible, because he'd give that answer to ANYONE who walked in asking for same-sex figurines. But if he has a product that he's willing to sell to some people, but not others, that's sheer discrimination. And legally allowing businesses to use religion to discriminate against customers is a dangerous precedent.

After all, I'm sure that many would make a case for refusing to serve interracial couples, Muslims, etc., using their religious beliefs as a shield.

The funny part here, well there's so many, but one of the funny parts here is that you're not the only one in this thread who says if the ruling goes a particular way it'll be sending people back to the stone age. This willingness to liken your own ideas to be so regressive that they would be more suitable for cavemen is hysterical.

Indeed, the Mormons had to endure decades of discrimination and persecution before becoming accepted. SD and AE are arguing that LGBT people should just put up with it for a while, under the guise of religious freedom.

No. You're simply lying again. In fact, I said the opposite of that.

It's possible to be religious without being discriminatory. Consider that going by sheer statistics, most wedding cake bakers in the U.S. are Christians. Also consider that most wedding cake bakers are willing to prepare cakes for same-sex couples. Somehow, they manage.

Two customers come into a bakery:

Jim and Jerry are celebrating 10 successful years in the light refraction business. To commemorate this milestone, they'd like a cake saying "Congratulations Jim & Jerry" across a huge sweeping rainbow.

Later that day, Jerry and Jim walk in with plans to celebrate their upcoming wedding. They see the almost-finished product being made for the previous customers and say "that's EXACTLY what we want!"

Should the baker make both cakes? Neither? Just one?
