well, that was a pretty dumb ass comment to make. The last thing we want is to start a war with North Korea. It would be a disaster and potentially a world war. Defense Sec. Mattis said that their ICBM launch didn't bring us closer to war. So what the fuck is this General talking about?

Is it better with full blown war, then?

Then China and Russia is gonna take up arms, too, 'cause they sure as hell don't want a pro-West united Korea. That's the only reason Kim is shaking his dick.

I do not want a war, especially not a war that we fight with rules that drag the war out for a decade or more. However, right now we have the leader of a third world country that could strike our country with a nuclear weapon. If that doesn't put pause in your thought pattern, nothing will. Put aside your hatred of President Trump for a minute. What would you like him to do? Sanctions are not stopping this threat. Do we hold Pyongyang at arm's length and only fire if fired upon? Is this a case where we can wait until someone else makes the first strike? What do you tell the families of those dead if we do nothing and he launches a nuclear weapon, no matter how crude?
I think war is most likely off the table. That's a big step and estimates are hundreds of thousands would die.

Trump must have really scared the hell out of N. Korea when he said "Severe Things" would happen. Really? "Severe Things." Ooooh, scary!

Trumps limited vocabulary is making us look weak.

Look, I get it. Nobody wants their enemy to get hold of deadly weapons. Israel would bomb Iran, rather than let them develop nukes. And I am convinced that Russian missiles would rain down on Kiev, if Ukraine so much as makes serious talk of starting up their own WMD program...

But are US and NK really at THAT level too?

"The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." - Douglas MacArthur

President Donald J Trump is in an untenable position when it comes to the North Korea situation. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. A third world nation that is very unhappy with us, now has the power to reach out and lay devastation upon us greater than we have ever experienced. Worse, this country is governed by a supreme leader who has demonstrated that he little to no regard for human life. Our country does not wage war. We engage in specific targeted military operations, while our enemies do not follow such doctrine. Our military forces seek to minimize the loss of civilian life while our enemies wage war against civilian targets while avoiding military ones.

What makes North Korea different than the other nuclear-weapon states on the planet? The United Kingdom and France are our allies. China and Russia both understand and subscribe to the mutually assured self destruction theory. India, Pakistan, and Israel have the weapons but have not demonstrated a capability to deliver one to the United States of America. FedEX won't deliver one. We have North Korea who is clearly not a friend, who has demonstrated the capability to hit us by conducting both nuclear tests and ICBM tests.

How bad is the risk? An above atmosphere nuclear blast could shut down the west coast with an EMP from which we'd be looking at decades to fully recover. A direct hit on one of our major cities could kill hundreds of thousands. Is Kim Jung Un playing checkers or chess? This man executed his uncle and his entire family. He is believed to have ordered the hit on his own brother. The previous administration imposed sanctions upon North Korea. President Obama said that North Korea was the most heavily sanctioned, most cut-off nation on earth.

It is obvious that sanctions levied without the support of Russia and China will not work. Do we pay North Korea to shut down the nuclear program? If so, will we next have to pay India, Pakistan, and Iran to cease theirs? Will a nuclear test pave the way to capitulation and rewards in the future? It is my thought that we need some diplomacy. We need a negotiator. This country has a huge trade deficit with China. China now has something that we want. President Trump is going to have to get Beijing to help us on this one. A direct attack upon North Korea is not the answer. If we are unable to get China to back us on the sanctions then we may need to begin talks with South Korea to return nuclear weapons to the peninsula. South Korea, whom we are obligated to defend is a sitting duck if Kim Jung Un has a bad hair day. Japan, whom we are obligated to defend still remembers those two days in 1945 when Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit by something that is barely a fraction of what one of these nuclear blasts would do.

I believe diplomacy with China (and maybe Russia). If that fails and we do need a military answer we need China (and maybe Russia) to go in with us. It needs to be the three most powerful nations on this planet sending a message to rogue states. That message is that when you go nuclear and build a delivery system that puts the three superpowers on edge, it could get bad. If we fail to do anything about this, we will have a nuclear Iran with which to deal next. Worse, we could suffer a big hit on our west coast.

I don't have the answer. I just have an opinion.
