Rand Paul likely to get a war vote

After threatening to scuttle all amendments on a massive defense policy bill, Sen. Rand Paul is likely to secure a vote on ending the war authorizations the US military uses to fight terrorism across the globe.
The 2001 and 2002 AUMFs authorized the war against Al Qaeda and the Iraq War, and they provide the legal basis that the Obama administration and now the Trump administration has used for the fight against global terrorism.

Senate leaders appear to have agreed to give Paul a vote on his amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act after he threatened to object to all other amendments, which would have effectively prevented any amendments from getting a vote on the massive defense policy bill. The vote will be on whether to kill Paul's amendment.

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Paul argued that the current war against ISIS and Al Qaeda across the Middle East was illegal, and Congress should reassert its authority to declare war from the Executive Branch.

"For the first time in 16 years, I'm advocating we should vote on whether or not we should be at war," Paul said. "Will senators idly sit by and let the wars continue, unabated and unauthorized?"

Whether or not you agree with the military action, the no president should have open authorization to engage in endless war.

I agree with Paul on this one.

Although Congress has always had the power to simply defund the presidents war effort this would make it official.

Its time to end this madness.

Yeah, there is bipartisan support for this, it's only Paul that has had the courage to take a stand. Lots of respect to him for that.

They will never do that. Defunding soldiers in combat. There are easier ways to commit suicide.

Yeah ... we need to formalize a process that allows for the military and the administration to adapt but still play by the rules as they're supposed to. The most straightforward way to do it would be to repeal all current AUMFs, and pass a new one on Al Qaeda, Da'esh, and confirmed, active affiliates, but pair that legislation with an AUMF that automatically sunsets every year and has to be renewed, with combat being required to end if a sunset occurs within six months.
Thanks from MaryAnne, Panzareta and Friday13

Gosh you and Rep Barbara Lee now have something in common. She was all over CSPAN today with this.

I like that sunset provision. One of the reasons the last Congress didn't pass an AUMF to fight ISIS was that the Obama Administration wanted to extend provisions of it into the next presidency. We shouldn't let one president determine how another conducts his war strategy.

What the hell difference does it make if we still have a dysfunctional Congress? The only reason Congress abandoned their war making power to begin with is because, as an institution, they quite simply don't have the courage to declare war when it's necessary, nor to oppose war when it isn't.
