At Air Force Academy, Black Students Told to " Go Home’ subjected to racial slurs.

The U.S. Air Force Academy is currently investigating an incident of racial slurs written on the dormitory message boards of five black cadets at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School earlier this week.

Lieutenant Colonel Allen Heritage, director of public affairs for the academy, told Air Force Times the slurs were discovered Monday after one of the cadet’s mother’s posted a photo to Facebook on Wednesday that shows a white board with the words “go home n*" on it. The post has since been removed.
“This is why I’m so hurt!” the mother said. “These young people are supposed to bond and protect each other and the country. Who would my son have to watch out for? The enemy or the enemy?”

I suspect this is something we all can agree is unacceptable as well as clearly racist.

The head of the Air Force Academy delivered a resounding message on Thursday in response to racial slurs that were found on the academy’s campus, saying that if students could not treat their peers of different races with respect, “then you need to get out.”

In a five-minute address in front of the academy’s 4,000 cadets and 1,500 staff members, Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria affirmed the Air Force’s belief in “the power of diversity” and insisted that “small thinking and horrible ideas” had no place there.

He was responding to racial slurs that were found on the dormitory message boards of five black students at a preparatory school on the academy’s campus on Monday, said the academy, which is investigating.

“If you’re outraged by those words then you’re in the right place,” General Silveria said. “You should be outraged not only as an airman, but as a human being.”

The most diverse group I have ever been involved in was the military. If someone is a racist, then they cannot function effectively as a member of the armed forces.

the military was where I was pretty much introduced to racism. But, that was a long time ago. And , in fairness, not everyone was ok with it.

Rumors have abounded for quite awhile that the Air Force is quite racist and homophobic. I don't have any idea if that's true. Also that white supremacist groups have heavily infiltrated the military. One article I saw said Aryan Nation is involved there as much as in prisons.

I was commissioned through OCS. Believe me, some "ringknockers" can be assholes. Well, at least, that was the case in the Army.

Have only had limited contact with anybody from the AF academy but they certainly came out overtly religious and far rightwing. Don't know if that's just anecdotal or a trend.

Yeah, it's been an ongoing problem for some time.
