Susan Collins to make major announcement on Friday

Will she run for governor instead?

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) will announce at a local Chamber of Commerce event on Friday whether she will run for governor — a decision that remains shrouded in secrecy and could upend the Senate political landscape.

The influential moderate plans to make the announcement during a speech she's giving on health care in Rockport, Maine, according to a source familiar with the event. The speech is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Collins has wrestled for months with whether to leave the Senate to launch a gubernatorial run, and has given few clues about where she will ultimately land. Her Senate colleagues, particularly fellow moderates, have been urging Collins to stay, and senior Republicans said this week that they were completely in the dark about what Collins will do.

Maine's Republican governor, Paul LePage, would tap a replacement to serve out the rest of Collins’ Senate term should she be elected governor.

But while fellow senators are urging Collins to remain in the Senate, they’re also sympathetic to her wishes to be closer to home.

“For people like me and Susan, our life isn’t here,” said Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), a close friend of Collins who wants her to stay. “Our life is back in our home state. And I think that’s really a big part of it, too.”

Whatever she chooses, I wish her well.

Does anyone have any idea who would run for her Senate seat?

No. Of course there are horrid rumors that LePage will nominate himself! I don't think he can but there is definitely fear!

I don't doubt that she wants to get out of the Senate. The salient question is whether she also wants out of the Republican Party. I just can't envision her asking LePage to do stump speeches for her when she runs for Governor.

She has done this before. She has considered running for governor before and decided to remain in the senate. She actually ran in the 1990s and lost. But now I have read her husbands health isn't great so its possible she wants to remain home. She will probably remain a republican but she is a northeastern republican so that's different from whats in DC nowadays. Either decision she makes wouldn't surprise me, I do think she enjoys the senate too but maybe now its a little harder.

When I saw the headline, my thought was she's cutting ties with the GOP.

I wouldn't think so, she is a high ranking member of Maines GOP. Her hubby is also a donor to local GOP politicians. That would be surprising. I think it will be her decision to remain in the senate or run as governor. As a side note, the local news claims people all over New England are begging her to stay in the senate because they don't want LePage nominating a senator for so long.

LePage is also a "northeastern republican", but that obviously doesn't mean what it used to mean.
