I think nowadays its more difficult because we have so many outlets to get things going. When I was a kid, there was the nightly news and newspapers. Some political magazines but most reported news not commentaries. If there were some, they were labeled as such. Now, I can go on the internet, start a wild accusation or rumor and send it all over. If it goes viral it could get picked up by millions. Look at YouTube success. So the disinformation campaign has just gotten easier for anyone. I really dont see how we put Pandora back in the box at this time. We just have to be smarter and pickier about what we think is "news" and what isnt.

Ms Kelly said China and Russia had pioneered widespread net controls but the techniques had now gone "global".

Many other nations, including Turkey, the Philippines, Syria and Ethiopia, now employed them extensively, she said.
    "
The effects of these rapidly spreading techniques on democracy and civic activism are potentially devastating," added Ms Kelly.

I mean I guess if you don't care about democracy it's all ok right?

ahso thats why.. recently I've been doing alot of internet research on trump's asia trip and all the articles & youtubes are full of comments that are 99% pro-duterte. which was odd I thought.

almost all of the misinformation/lies about elections in the US comes from within, not from foreign sources.

The ability to spot fake news would be taught already in a logic / practical reasoning class. Which used to be standard curriculum but I guess isn’t taught anymore.

Logic should be taught in middle school. Seems to me that would cover the “fake news awareness”. Though - not everyone retains what they learn in school. I don’t think I could pass a grade 10 science test.

I was thrilled today to get 97% in an online motorcycle licence test after fifty years on the road. I would only have died three times!
