Exclamation Longtime country singer, songwriter Mel Tillis dies

Longtime country singer, songwriter Mel Tillis dies - ABC News
    By The Associated Press

"Mel Tillis, the affable longtime country music star who wrote hits for Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs and many others, and overcame a stutter to sing on dozens of his own singles, has died."
"A spokesman for Tillis, Don Murry Grubbs, said Tillis died early Sunday at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. He was 85."

My sincere condolences to the family of this great country and western singer. May his soul rest in peace.

I flew on a commercial jet with Mel Tillis about 40 years ago. Of course he was in first class and I wasn't. Didn't say anything to him, I don't collect autographs. RIP Mr. Tillis, I do enjoy your music.

    Class act.

My parents saw him numerous times and he always remembered them from one concert to the next. They had numerous beers with him and his band on the tour bus and backstage. That was when country music was just about the music.

    RIP Mel.

Can't think of anyone else with a serious speech impediment who was a good singer.

He couldn't talk without stuttering, but could sing.

    Maybe it's common, I dunno.

My understanding is that it is not uncommon. Something like speaking and singing use some different parts of the brain, though a cursory search did not turn up anything. Still, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttering#Variability

Also, do not forget King George VI's speech impediment, as dramatized (with some historical inaccuracy) in The King's Speech.
