Russians dismiss Michael Flynn's guilty plea

(CNN) Two prominent Russian politicians dismissed news that Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, with one saying the former national security adviser is a scapegoat in an attack against President Donald Trump.

Flynn's plea Friday relates to conversations he had with Russia's ambassador last year. He also disclosed that he is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

The plea is the closest Mueller's probe has come to the Oval Office in investigations into the Trump campaign's possible connection to Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Russian Sen. Franz Klintsevich described Flynn as a scapegoat, according to state news outlet Ria Novosti.

"The former US national security adviser Michael Flynn was just the one they caught. The main object of this attack is of course Donald Trump," Klintsevich is quoted as saying.

Russian Sen. Alexey Pushkov said Flynn's case is much ado about nothing.

"In the United States they continue to inflate a 'sack of smoke ,' " he tweeted. "With Manafort and Papadopoulos, nothing came out. Now they are hyping up the no less empty 'Flynn case. ' "

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who has pleaded not guilty, was indicted in October on charges relating to his undisclosed foreign lobbying on behalf of Ukraine.

George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, pleaded guilty in October to making a false statement to the FBI after he lied about his interactions with foreign officials close to the Russian government.

The charges against Flynn on Friday indicate that Mueller's investigation is moving into Trump's inner circle.

Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also rejected claims that his country attempted to interfere in the US election.

He is an ultranationalist hardliner, who has his own political propaganda show on state TV, where he talks shit about America and the West

    An Afghan War vet

President, actually, of the national association of Afghan War vets

has been connected to organized crime, in this capacity: in the 90s, large and well organized groups of Afghan vets, armed to the teeth with AKs illegally acquired from contacts back in tbe military, actually pretty much took over the streets of many Russian cities, using their superior combat skills, experience, and firepower (this was late 80s, early 90s, when many civilian gangs had no access yet to any more than a revolver, while the "Afghantsy", again, packed AKs) to muscle into "protection" extortion rackets on shop owners, drug markets, prostitution, etc, killing anyone who stood in their way, unless the civilian gangster agreed to work for them.

    Mikhail Likhodei (center)

was a sub-colonel in Afghanistan, became a fucking crime lord, a kingpin, in Moscow.

He would be assassinated in 1994, by a rival group of Afghan vets, they put a bomb in the elevator of his apartment building. Later, another bomb went off at his funeral, killing many of his closest associates; as well as dozen and half innocent people, including a young TV reporter, girl barely in her 20s...

So much violence back then related to Afghan vets, so many killings and blood and mayhem. And Klintsevich was in the midst of all that. He knew Likhodei, from back in Afghan, and they remained close after. And also knew the rival group who killed Likhodei too, so much so, they apparently called him before the funeral and warned him not to go, he has told this himself in interviews. That's why he is still alive...

And that whole Afghan mafia is still in business. Control most illegal taxis in Moscow, for example. Recruit a lot of younger ex-military guys as myscle now, veterans of Chechnya, Georgia, and now guys who fought in Donbass and Syria too... And Klintsevich is still (allegedly) a part of all that.

He is also an even crazier nationalist than Pushkov, not unexpectedly.

I'd say anything we hear from Russia about this can be discounted as a self-serving smokescreen. They'll never meet American justice, and they have no interest in seeing it work well.

    agree with the above.
What interest would Russia have in defending Flynn?
It's about as credible as a bank robber claiming his get away driver was just delivery pizza.

Indeed. And if they did want to defend him, they should have picked better spokesmen for sure lol

Except if this thing develops serious legs, you could see all of Europe take the Magnitsky approach.

They'd lose billions. Sure, they have billions to lose without too much suffering, but they're not untouchable.
