I saw a few athletes flying the Olympic flag during the parade for the previous summer games. Cannot remember why tho.

There was a team of refugees from various countries, in Rio, as I recall, under the Olympic flag.

Russia has had a few years where they just flagrantly defied doping laws, 88 women's records if memory serves.

Anyway, I think there should be 2 versions, 1 where nothing more than vitamin supplements is allowed. The other where there's no doping rules.

This way there's still the bar for the purity of sport and the rest can just openly achieve the best that science can provide.

I remember the refugees. One of them was the swimmer who swam to Europe carrying her little brother.

I’m dating myself but I think there was some stateless athletes from the former Yugoslavia or something? As it was in conflict. Bosnians or Serbians or both? Am I imagining this?

So much for the Olympics being a true test of where the best come from, its all just a show now.

The athletes didnít break into labs and bribe their way in. It was gangsters, politicians and association officials.

And itís not like they can choose their association officials.

But the fact is - all those other athletes from around the world who came in second, third and fourth due to Russian government manipulation were robbed of their livlihoods. Permanently. Theyíll never get what they earned.
Precisely. It's not that they doped, it's that they doped in ways no one else knew about or had the ability to compete with, on a systematic basis, disrupting the whole concept of sport and the rewards that each person involved can reap. And if there's any truth to the continual rumors that the Russians have sabotaged the tests of competing athletes in the past...

Was that back in the 90s then, this Olympics that you remember? I was talking Rio, last year. No idea about the 90s, I was way too young then to pay attention to such things. Not to mention was myself a refugee for a time, in some of those years...

In combination with the NHL already refusing to allow their players to take part, this will mean all the top professional talent in the world will be absent from the Olympics. It will be a bunch of amateurs playing each other...

On the other hand, that is how the Olympics was SUPPOSED to be, from the beginning. So, maybe not necessarily a bad thing. A return to the original spirit of the Games, if you will
I still don't get how the NHL or the KHL can forbid their players to represent their nations at the Olympics. I mean I know they can, but it seems strange. Shouldn't that be up to the individual players' decision?
    Thanks from The Man
