Olympics is supposed to be amateur sports either way.

Yes, but that should IMO be one more reason professional hockey players (or anyone else) could compete there, because it should be an amateur event, totally separated from their regular paid work. I suppose their employers don't want them to get tired or injured outside the professional leagues, but it seems like a weird limitation of their freedom.

All the players have contracts binding them to the respective league. Playing elsewhere in violation of contract would result in very serious fines.

MOSCOW — Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says the state will never acknowledge the accusation of state-sponsored doping that prevents the Russia team from competing at the Pyeongchang Olympics because it considers it false.

Medvedev, speaking at the Cabinet session on Thursday, said, “We can’t and will not acknowledge false conclusions.”

He also argued that the International Olympic Committee decision on Tuesday to ban the Russia team from the Winter Games in South Korea for anti-doping violations at the 2014 Sochi Games had political underlining.

Medvedev said the move was taken in order to influence public opinion in Russia ahead of the March 18 presidential election.

After President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia won’t boycott the Olympics, Medvedev says the Cabinet will support Russians who want to compete as neutral athletes at the games in February.

    Love this:

About the lady in the video:

Yolanda Chen (Russian: Иоланда Чен; born July 26, 1961 in Moscow) is a retired Russian athlete. She started as a pentathlete, but decided to specialize in long jump. In 1988 she achieved a personal best of 7.16 metres, a good result, but from 1992 she switched in triple jump instead, a relatively new event for women. Inspired by her father Yevgeniy Chen, who was among the world elite in the 1950s, she managed to jump 13.72 metres in 1992.

In 1993 Iolanda Chen improved to 14.97 metres, a new outdoor record which would also remain her personal best. Her record was beaten at the World Championships the same year by fellow Russian Anna Biryukova, who jumped 15.09m. In 1995 Chen appeared at the World Indoor Championships and won the gold medal with 15.03 metres, a new world indoor record. This was a huge improvement from the previous championship record of 14.47m. Unfortunately she did not follow up this success, finishing 11th at the World Championships the same year.

Chen married pole vaulter Yevgeniy Bondarenko. She now works as a commentator for the Russian Eurosport.

Her paternal grandfather was Chinese, hence the surname lol

Anyway, in the video, she is admonishing the nationalist hotheads demanding a boycott of the Olympics. Says that, aside from all else, the IOC could retaliate to a boycott by a country by imposing a two-cycle ban (meaning, from up to FOUR Olympic Games over 8 years). Didn't know they have such a rule, but, she would know better than me, it's her world. That means, she says, that would kill many sports in the country.

Piotr Tolstoy, about him I wrote here: Russia retaliating on foreign media

What a disgrace to Lev Tolstoy's once proud name...

Well, he pops up, says, we can all wait 8 years, why is this such a problem. And she says, YOU can wait, and you are free to do whatever you want; many athletes can't. Very easy to be a "patriot" at someone else's dime, Mr. Tolstoy.

Love it. Really put that dick in his place...

Great woman, great athlete, in her day

not to mention one of the sexiest women in Russia in the 90s

even made it onto the cover of a 1996 issue of Russian Playboy (which had only first came out the year before that)

Personally, I support her completely. Let all who want to go, go. Prove to the world Russians can win without all the cheating and shit.
