    Russia Barred From 2018 Olympics

    Wow

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.

That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

The ruling cemented that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program. The scheme was rivaled perhaps only by the notorious program conducted by East Germany throughout the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.

This isn't about politics. This about the basic integrity of sports. They have been caught systematically undermining anti-doping safeguards with the assistance of intelligence agencies and other government resources, and they haven't even acknowledged it happened never mind apologized.

Until they do, they must not be allowed to participate in any Olympics and FIFA should also move or cancel the World Cup.

If they are banned for the steroids that is different if it political I oppose it.

My perspective on this has always been, is it truly so bad that athletes are enhancing their bodies in order to compete better? Not necessarily, as long as all athletes have access to such methods. But if we are going to ban the use of PEDs, there must be enforced compliance. If you try to evade those rules, the athletes and coaches responsible need to be suspended and/or banned, depending on severity/past incidents. If you try to actively undermine those rules in your favor, your whole team must be banned. That's just how it is, regardless of who does it, what they believe or why.

They didn't just dope their own athletes, they may have sabotaged the tests of rival athletes to try to illegitimately disqualify them.

Doping and keeping it a matter between athlete/coach/doctor is one thing. This was a systematic assault on world sport.

It turns out, the Russian state doesn't really care who complains when its national policy is set toward ruining the rule of law.

I doubt there will be any neutrals. Putin said he won't pet anyone go in this case, total boycott: Russia reportedly considering boycotting 2018 Winter Olympics if it isn't banned

Although, now, they are saying they won't: Russia says no plan to boycott Olympics after doping scandal

This, after he said for weeks that they will. So sick of Putin constantly changing his word on everything. So many decisions he makes, not just this, domestic shit too, the Russian media have to first report on it; and then, in the morning, refute own reports, after he gets some sleep, wakes up, and changes his bloody mind again... Confusing as hell, for everyone...

Anyway, am also waiting to see what the KHL, the hockey league over there, do.

They did say before they may keep all their players, including foreigners, out of the Olympics in retaliation for all this: KHL could pull out of Olympics over Russia doping cases

In combination with the NHL already refusing to allow their players to take part, this will mean all the top professional talent in the world will be absent from the Olympics. It will be a bunch of amateurs playing each other...

On the other hand, that is how the Olympics was SUPPOSED to be, from the beginning. So, maybe not necessarily a bad thing. A return to the original spirit of the Games, if you will
