Sad that his paranoia brought him down.

But see, that is the difference in remembering Nixon personally instead of parroting what you read.
I remember Nixon personally, FFS. I don't give a flying monkey fuck what you try to credit him with. He killed 3.5 million people and was a huge force for evil. Nixon did not trust voters and did not believe in democracy. He and Hoover and their henchmen wanted a secret cabal to run the US, with a president fronting it as if nothing had changed.

I can't believe any of my fellow Boomers are still trying to excuse that shithead.

Is saying anything positive about him such a terrible sin? Even if he's all the things you say, he can also have done what Mary Anne suggests. Don't be a black and white thinker. It's beneath you.

You're right, he created the EPA, he created the office of Inspector General in all agencies and didn't want them to be political appointments, but that became the fashionable thing to do under Reagan
He had the Open Letter diplomacy, negotiated with China and Russia by trading food for diplomacy, helped the mid west by doing that
He also subsidized the oil production in Nigeria and Venezuela, therefore breaking the back of OPEC, much to the chagrin of the Hunt Brothers.

But he also bombed Cambodia, he had a dark streak, a self loathing of monumental proportions he could have ended the war in Vietnam earlier and chose not to.

Nixon was the proverbial Janus of American politics, I don't think the history books are complete on his legacy, just yet.

I've read speculation that Nixon wasn't entirely down with the cabal, wasn't properly one of the inner sanctum, one of the Yalie Skull and Bones bunch that took over the CIA and from there launched a veritable coup of the U.S. government. And that's why he was pushed out.

Certainly, if nothing else, there are aspects of the break-in and the news story that beggar belief, like the volume and severity of idiotic mistakes made during the break-in itself that essentially ensured discovery. Mistakes made by people who should know better.

An exhaustive study is Family Of Secrets. Follow Bush Sr. rise and peruse a tangled snarl of acquaintances and overlapping interests and coincidences. It's a bit much, and you'll end up skimming it eventually, but it does raise some interesting questions.

Silly thread that is beneath its author.

Not everyone who compliments themselves (especially when it is done as a defense mechanism as in this case) is like Fredo - who was a pathetic character incapable of leading or accomplishing anything of note. Where as Trump on the other hand has risen to highest office available to him and amassed a billion dollar fortune.

I would not compare Trump to any of the characters from Mario Puzo's Godfather. He is nothing like any of them.

There’s a key difference between film and reality, though: The Corleone family had the awareness and vigilance to exclude Fredo from power. The American political system did not do so well.
    No.

The key difference here is that the political class attempted to exclude Trump from power. They just failed to do so - because Trump was simply too much for them to contend with. And that is not something I can picture Fredo Corleone's character being able to pull off - who would have melted under such pressure and opposition. Let alone succeed at doing it.

The only relevant Godfather comparison that I can see here is how Michael Corleone's enemies consistently underestimated him similar to how Trump's enemies and critics do also. They look at him as a joke - but too often he is the one who ends up laughing in the end.

After a bitter eight years we have a president who doesn't seem to hate America.
anyone who thinks Obama hated America is an ignorant and partisan fucking dumbshit.

Trump is an indulged rich kid with big aspirations, so while parts of the OP are true, Fredo never ordered a hit on anyone.

While Trump, who has dealt with Mobsters in the New York Real Estate market most of his adult life may be far more subtle when not mugging for the cameras.

Personally, I am counting on it (perhaps hoping is closer).
Obama is 10 times the man and president than the dumbshit in there now.

Nixon was a good president, just a little crooked.
