I can't believe any of my fellow Boomers are still trying to excuse that shithead.

Not everyone who compliments themselves (especially when it is done as a defense mechanism as in this case) is like Fredo - who was a pathetic character incapable of leading or accomplishing anything of note. Where as Trump on the other hand has risen to highest office available to him and amassed a billion dollar fortune.

I would not compare Trump to any of the characters from Mario Puzo's Godfather. He is nothing like any of them.
Trump is a dumbfuck, they were all smarter

Mussolini got the trains to run on time.

    Doesn't excuse his fascist horrors.

Same with Nixon. Most apologists credit him with opening China to trade with the West.

Don't care. If there's a hell, he is surely burning in it.

But unlike the Godfather character, the president of the United States is backed by powerful people enabling him.

“I can handle things. I’m smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb. I’m smart and I want respect!”

This morning’s presidential Twitter outburst recalls those words of Fredo Corleone’s in one of the most famous scenes from The Godfather series. Trump tweeted that his “two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart,” and in a subsequent tweet called himself a “very stable genius.”

Trump may imagine that he’s Michael Corleone, the tough and canny rightful heir—or even Sonny Corleone, the terrifyingly violent but at least powerful heir apparent—but after today he is Fredo forever.

There’s a key difference between film and reality, though: The Corleone family had the awareness and vigilance to exclude Fredo from power. The American political system did not do so well.

As a fan of the Godfather films (the first two, anyway), I love the metaphor. It fits, too.

    Phenomenal actor. Stunning resume.

    Died way too young.

Certainly, if nothing else, there are aspects of the break-in and the news story that beggar belief, like the volume and severity of idiotic mistakes made during the break-in itself that essentially ensured discovery. Mistakes made by people who should know better.

An exhaustive study is Family Of Secrets. Follow Bush Sr. rise and peruse a tangled snarl of acquaintances and overlapping interests and coincidences. It's a bit much, and you'll end up skimming it eventually, but it does raise some interesting questions.
This is true, although the Yalies also distrusted Hoover. Nixon and Hoover loathed one another, which is all that saved American democracy. We came very, very close to a secret dictatorship between the end of WWII and the end of the Vietnam War. If the bad men with bad intentions had cooperated, we'd certainly have lost, and God only knows what sort of country they would have created.

Civil rights would certainly have stalled out at the 1930's point. Imagine Jim Crow laws in America today.

He also didn't start any wars, but ended our involvement in one.

Why are Trump supporters so obsessed with Obama?

Oh yeah, because they can't afford to look closely at Trump.

    Carry on.

(Great analogy, Ian .... just expressing the thought I had while reading the "but Obama" deflections on the first page.)

So now someone was EXCUSING Nixon? Really? I didn't see that. Anyone recounting Nixon's positive achievements can do so without excusing his many, overweening faults and bad acts. Overreact much?

Trump did the very thing Democrats wanted with the new tax bill. He raised the taxes on the rich and now they are going out of their minds because of it .. Only a Genius could figure out how to do that.
