    Donald Trump Goes Full Fredo

    Donald Trump Goes Full Fredo
But unlike the Godfather character, the president of the United States is backed by powerful people enabling him.
    by David Frum

“I can handle things. I’m smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb. I’m smart and I want respect!”

This morning’s presidential Twitter outburst recalls those words of Fredo Corleone’s in one of the most famous scenes from The Godfather series. Trump tweeted that his “two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart,” and in a subsequent tweet called himself a “very stable genius.”

Trump may imagine that he’s Michael Corleone, the tough and canny rightful heir—or even Sonny Corleone, the terrifyingly violent but at least powerful heir apparent—but after today he is Fredo forever.

There’s a key difference between film and reality, though: The Corleone family had the awareness and vigilance to exclude Fredo from power. The American political system did not do so well.

As a fan of the Godfather films (the first two, anyway), I love the metaphor. It fits, too.

Some people have trouble separating movies and reality. Some people have trouble separating performance and personality. Well, they can do that with liberals. Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson were liars, frauds, and cheats but they liberals liked what they produced. Oddly enough, Richard Nixon was a liberal that liberals chose to hate although they liked what he produced.

After a bitter eight years we have a president who doesn't seem to hate America.

Obama didn't hate America. But people who support Trump do.

Obama has more Reverend Wright in him than you would dare to admit.

Trump is an indulged rich kid with big aspirations, so while parts of the OP are true, Fredo never ordered a hit on anyone.

While Trump, who has dealt with Mobsters in the New York Real Estate market most of his adult life may be far more subtle when not mugging for the cameras.

Personally, I am counting on it (perhaps hoping is closer).

"Richard Nixon was a liberal"? By what metric to you measure liberalism?

He was a fucking fascist. That seems to preclude any taint of liberalism, to my eye.

No....Trump is not subtle. He has no secret or private side which is adult and wise or even savvy.

He really is the trainwreck we are all watching.

To be fair, nobody conducted business in NYC during the 1970's and 1980's without "consorting with mobsters"; they controlled the garbage collection and most of the skilled trades.

I admire Rudy Guiliani still, despite his recent faux pax, because he was the NYC DA who broke the mob's back. It was the accomplishment of a courageous and brilliant man.

Actually, most clear-headed observers would say Obama advocated for the America that was great, without having to be labeled so.

On the other hand, the current president seems to resent so many aspects of America's governmental process. He regularly denigrates the free press and the judicial branch. Almost weekly he tweets a comment that demonstrates he either doesn't understand how our government works or he's frustrated by it.

So I'm thinking the current president is closer to hating America and I get the impression about 60% of Americans would agree with this.
