It will be controversial either way. If a person wants society to regard the person as a particular gender (irrespective of biological sex), and wants to be able to play on that gender's sports teams, I don't see a problem. If the person wants society to regard him or her as a particular gender but be able to play on the opposite sex's sports teams, that seems like an inconsistency/double standard and doesn't make much sense.

But if the league makes a rule that says biological sex prevails, and biological men who want to be regarded as women nonetheless play on mens teams and biological women who want to be regarded as men nonetheless play on women's teams, that seems like it would be okay.

Seems like, if living as a woman is the way it has to be for a male-born person, surrendering access to athletics is going to have to be one of the hardships you deal with in life. It's obviously completely unfair to have males competing with females. We all have our trials and tribulations, and the simple reality is, there is no way to resolve that by allowing them to compete as females that is also fair to the other competitors.

Allowing people to live as they choose is one thing. Fucking shit up for everybody in order to do it is another.

I honestly do not see how anything other than this is reasonable.

Wow. So women aren't competent enough to compete with men? It's so "obvious"?

No one is saying that trans people can change their chromosomal sex. Though the science is young in studying transgender origins, there is science that points to a biological reason to why trans individuals identify as the opposite gender.

Spanish investigators—led by psychobiologist Antonio Guillamon of the National Distance Education University in Madrid and neuropsychologist Carme Junqu Plaja of the University of Barcelona—used MRI to examine the brains of 24 female-to-males and 18 male-to-females—both before and after treatment with cross-sex hormones. Their results, published in 2013, showed that even before treatment the brain structures of the trans people were more similar in some respects to the brains of their experienced gender than those of their natal gender. For example, the female-to-male subjects had relatively thin subcortical areas (these areas tend to be thinner in men than in women). Male-to-female subjects tended to have thinner cortical regions in the right hemisphere, which is characteristic of a female brain.
Other investigators have looked at sex differences through brain functioning. In a study published in 2014, psychologist Sarah M. Burke of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam and biologist Julie Bakker of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience used functional MRI to examine how 39 prepubertal and 41 adolescent boys and girls with gender dysphoria responded to androstadienone, an odorous steroid with pheromonelike properties that is known to cause a different response in the hypothalamus of men versus women. They found that the adolescent boys and girls with gender dysphoria responded much like peers of their experienced gender

Sports is no doubt most affected and complicated thing concerning transgender issues. I can't see how that can be remedied but then again, it's just sports, and the problems of incorporating transgender issues into competitive sports should never be the driver of policy.
