Interesting idea. Replace food stamps with food boxes.

On the one hand, it sounds like a good idea, giving good food to the poor in lieu of food stamps, which will save money and reduce fraud.

However, interesting that I am reading "SPQR" by Beard. The Tribune Tiberius Gracchus established a corn ration for all Roman citizens, but rather than have the state administer it, it was given over to private contractors. The contracts were very lucrative and actively sought, and they became a source of wealth for well placed political allies of those in power.

So interesting, anything the government does is by rule, more expensive, but handing over food giveaways to private companies, even with checks and balances, generally tends to award the well connected.

This idea is just so shortsighted. In the past several years we've been encouraging people to use their food stamps to buy fresh fruits and veggies. Now, the idiot in the Wh wants to feed thm processed food that is unhealthy. Many of the people on food stamps are on Medicaid at the same time. Did the idiot think this through? And most are either disabled, elderly or children. The most vulnerable of our population. He's just a sick and cruel bastard. Fortunately, his budget won't pass. But it just shows what mean, nasty piece of work he is. *spit*
In california, food stamps can be used to buy fresh produce at farmers markets. That not only helps the food stamp recipient, but also the small family farms that sell in the markets.

Im guessing the food boxes are a gift to large corporate factory farms.

    Thx
I have no idea what that is but it can't be good when all your foods are the same color 'palette' as the STYROFOAM container. Of that I'm sure.

    Yep!! CORN, WHEAT--really big AGRA?

Not all but seems like most stores here have produce and meats with some small signage, usually next to the price, telling buyers what foods can be bought and even recommended for mother/babies--it's a 3 or 4 later designation (_IC?)
