Despite which it's still higher than Canada or Europe. Why has it happened? Nobody knows. Alcohol consumption is lower than other places, incomes are higher, unemployment lower...It's a puzzle.

As far as these mass shootings go... it starts with the crazy person, not the guns...

But, having such proliferation is certainly not conducive to a less violent country, society.

It is the proverbial "match to the powder keg" if that society becomes more violent, so the availability of guns IS a huge part of the problem.

And we have always had a very high rate of gun violence in this country, maybe a few percent shift from time to time, but compare that to other developed countries and it has ALWAYS been a disaster.

    Thx

I posit that the society itself contributes to this problem. All the excuses like video games, the demise of the nuclear family, Heavy metal music, movies and the like are just bullshit. These factors exist elsewhere with the difference being that other societies are less belligerent (see the comment about constant war) and less selfish (universal health care and the like). Even the Christian religion exhibits more militant behaviour than other civilised countries, and there is this inane mindset of 'us and them' between the citizens and the government, when in actual fact they one and the same. The US can often appear to foster a culture of selfishness, mistrust and suspicion with the gun being the answer to one's problems. I love the US, but at times it can disgust me.

I doubt this comment will be popular, but someone had to say it.

The USA has no mandatory military service. This was a great deterrent to gun violence. Once you see someone you shot die you do change a little. Today the child does not know real death and does not care if he dies killing the bully or girl who told him he was no good. He knows the person is dead and that was his final act of life.

How many times are we going to here the old story about the kids in school showing up with their shotgun in the back window rack because they were "going hunting after school?" Back then almost NO ONE was fucking stupid enough to keep that firearm loaded like that, may well have been shells in the glove box.

That is part of it as well. In this country there is little, if any, difference between fame and infamy. Such mass killers have been quoted as saying things along the line of "now everyone will know my name."

Thanks a lot, Ted. That's pretty depressing.
Sad, but true, their are high school seniors graduating this year who have never known a time the U.S. was not at war.
