You know what the alternative is? It sucks even more. Best just to hope for a peaceful passing and as much of an independent and pain free life up to then as possible.

Beats the alternative. I suspect that the burden of age grows greater and greater with time, for some people faster than for others. At some point everyone probably decides they've had enough.

It really is gruesome, the older you get. I had a really hard time caring for the elderly when I first started Nursing. It was like looking deeply at your own mortality. I had to work outpatient for a few years until I came to grips with it.

    Here
My impression is that even as First Lady, her beautiful white hair at the time, endeared many to her as the First Grandmother, also.

No person, that includes me, as well as politicians, are perfect in my mind, but I still think people's deeds and intents can be weighed in terms of good and bad.

We know Barbara through her husband, her own deeds as First Lady and First Mom..... and have continued to know her through her sons and husband.

I believe there will be many many Americans that will be saddened to see Barbara pass on and because her husband, for all anyone can fault him for, seemed to many, to be more honorable, forthright and moderate than many other recent republicans, including his own son(s) and because of how he and Bill Clinton worked together to do some things, for the people of the world, following their political rivalry and presidencies, many will see both of their passing's as the passing, in some small way, of some remnants of American sanity and attempts to be somewhat fair and honest. That as opposed to what we see currently, in a world that now needs "fact checking" in an effort to aid anyone interested, in trying to determine where truth might lie and who to trust.

Definately I only want to live up until the point I am reasonably independent. When I can't feed myself or toilet myself, its over and out for me.
I'd go to a place that allows me to take a few pills and leave this earth rather than depend on others for those two basic functions.
Thanks from HCProf, Ian Jeffrey and Babba

I think you'll find that when it happens, you will decide that all your alternatives are worse.

True and I agree with most of what you say but I really think it was the start of the dirty tricks and mudding up peoples reputations with rumors that have brought us to the GOP of today. I think swiftboating started with his son and I think he had a duty not only as an X President but as a military man himself to impress upon his son that the right thing to do was to denounce the rumours and if George W didn't do that, then George H should have come out and done it himself. Kerry didn't deserve the swift-boating treatment and the GOP party went straight down hill morally after that. I don't know if what happened with the Iraq war and to his son's Presidency (George W.) was Karma for not doing the right thing during the election but I am a firm believer in the butterfly affect.

Same here. Hopefully by the time we need to make these decisions, there will be a Die with Dignity law in every State. I add extreme pain to your list as well. I don't do well with pain. Tho, it will be really bumming to me when I can't drive or play golf anymore.

Pain management if there is pain and comfort care can be a better option. She is a very sweet lady. I'm sorry to hear this.
