Cory Booker’s Litmus Test for Christians. Voting no on Pompeo

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) says he will not vote for President Trump's nominee to head the State Department, singling out the nominee's Christian views on sexuality.

"Do you believe that gay sex is a perversion?" That was the question directed at CIA Director Mike Pompeo last week during his Senate confirmation hearings to become the next secretary of state.

Here is one of their exchanges:

Booker: "Is being gay a perversion?"
Pompeo: "Senator, when I was a politician, I had a very clear view on whether it was appropriate for two same-sex persons to marry. I stand by that."
Booker: "So, you do not believe that it's appropriate for two gay people to marry?"
Pompeo: "Senator, I continue to hold that view."
Booker: "And so, people in the State Department, I've met some in Africa who are married, under your leadership, you do not believe that that should be allowed?"
Pompeo: "I believe it's the case we have married gay couples at the CIA. You should know, I treated them with the exact same set of rights..."
Booker: "Yes or no -- do you believe gay sex is a perversion?"
Pompeo: "Senator, I'm going to give you the same answer I just gave you previously. My respect for every individual, regardless of sexual orientation, is the same."

    ================================================== ========

I always thought having a religious test was a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Yet, we have a sitting U.S. Senator, basically making Christian beliefs a disqualifier. Article VI of the U.S. Constitution provides, “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office of public Trust under the United States.”

While Pompeo showed tolerance in the Q&A of gay couples with the exact same set of rights. Booker is showing zero tolerance of Christian beliefs.

Senator Feinstein and Durbin pulled this same crap earlier this year against a Catholic judge nominee.

The religious intolerance of the left goes all the way up to the level of U.S. Senator.

I guess in Booker's America Americans should be punished for their religious beliefs. For anyone to refuse to vote for a nominee simply because they don't believe in same sex marriage is just idiotic and almost despotic in nature, running contrary to the fundamental principles in our constitution.

Doesn't make the people of New Jersey look particularly good to have such an arrogant representative. So I hope they consider tossing him out next election. For the State to try and control what others believe through punitive measures is at the very heart of tyranny and authoritarianism.

He's grandstanding to send a message to the base that he will defend gay rights. Trump did/does the same thing with the wall.

Pompeo handled the questioning with grace and will treat each individual with respect.

Booker traveled down religious avenue with his questioning, which I disagree with.

Except that he is actually voting against Pompeo on religious grounds per his statement. I always thought that was a huge no go.... until now.

There are still plenty of countries in the world where, for religious reasons, gays are jailed or even executed just for being gay. Maybe having an SOS who agrees with those leaders that being gay is an "abomination" sends the wrong message.

In that sense it's relevant. It's not reasonable to expect a Republican like Pompeo to give a shit, but I don't see the difference between defending fundamentalist Christians thinking they have a "right" to discriminate based on religion and a country in Africa or the ME executing them for the same reason. Human rights should be for all humans, not just the ones Christians approve of.

Holding a Supreme Court seat open for almost a year just because one party wants it used to be a huge no go to. The rules have changed, apparently. You probably shouldn't expect better behavior from Dems if you don't expect it from Republicans.

What part of the U.S. Constitution was violated?

As far as what Booker, Feinstein, and Durbin have done it's clear, or at least I thought it was clear.... Article VI of the U.S. Constitution provides, “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office of public Trust under the United States.”

Being against gay marriage is not necessarily a religious belief. There are plenty of non Christian bigots out there also.

    In my mind
That does not make any sense.

When did Booker bring up religion, and in what Christian doctrine is same sex marriage prohibited?
