Pelosi defends Hoyers comments on secret audio tape

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi defended leadership meddling in crowded Democratic primary races Thursday after audio surfaced of House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer urging a progressive candidate in Colorado to drop out. Hoyer is heard telling liberal Democrat Levi Tillemann to drop out of the race in order to clear the field for establishment-backed Jason Crow, an Army veteran.

“I am for Crow because a judgment was made very early on. I didn’t know Crow. I didn’t participate in the decision. But a decision was made early on by the Colorado delegation,” Hoyer told Tillemann in the secretly recorded December meeting.

Crow was named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “red to blue” program in November, an unofficial endorsement from the House campaign arm.

The effort by Hoyer (D-Md.) to push Tillemann out is just the latest evidence of an ongoing war between the Democratic establishment and progressives over the best candidates to beat Republicans in November. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee sent an email Thursday morning encouraging donors to give to Tillemann and two liberal candidates in Nebraska and Pennsylvania the group says have been targeted by the DCCC.

PCCC and Democracy for America, a progressive PAC, later called on Hoyer to resign from Democratic leadership.

While I can admit to being of two minds on this, the progressive candidates are now making a ton of campaign money off of this tape. Could backfire big time.

I have no doubt the GOP does the same thing.

    Politics is not bean bag.

That said, the D's are in a tough spot. They have to find a way to appeal to the working class and the progressives.

Yea thats why this is tough and does put Pelosi in a bad light. On the one hand, she knows a blue dog moderate needs to win the primaries in red states to defeat the republicans. But now the progressives are peeved. Sanders just announced he will be endorsing candidates when he said he wouldnt previously. Thats just going to open old wounds. Lets face it, some of these progressives just cant win in these districts. But an audio tape now is making it look really bad, like those old smoke filled rooms.

Yeah, let’s squander this opportunity to take House in a “purity “ fight

Sanders needs to go away. Again I don't think the tape makes her sound bad. She's being pragmatic because she knows the "game" all to well. Like I said, the GOP does the same thing.

Progressives are going to have to make a decision. If they seriously want to take back the house and potentially the Senate, then they have to trust that people who have been doing this years knows what is best for any particular district. If they keep having hissy fits and the D's lose both - they are going to be blamed by mainstream Democrats. Not that all their ideas are bad - they are not. But these "purity" test's drive me nuts.

Already in CA there are so many D's running for seats - that the CA party has had to ask nicely for some of them to drop out. To me, it makes sense.

You have to focus on who is the right person for any given district.
