GOP congresscritter explains sea level rise...

...and says the Antarctic ice sheet is growing. Are republiCons allergic to science? Methinks this one has rocks in his head.

Republican congressman explains sea-level rise: it's rocks falling into the sea
Republican Mo Brooks of Alabama pushed back at the notion that rising sea levels were the result of global warming in a hearing of the House Science, Space and Technology on Wednesday.

Instead, Brooks pointed to silt deposition as well as erosion as a cause of rising sea levels. Questioning scientist Phil Duffy of the Woods Hole Research Center, Brooks postulated that silt and mud washed by rivers into the ocean caused water levels to rise as it settled on the sea floor. “Now you have got less space in those oceans because the bottom is moving up,” he said.

He went on: “What about the White Cliffs of Dover … [and] California, where you have the waves crashing against the shorelines, and time and time again you have the cliffs crashing into the sea? All of that displaces water which forces it to rise, does it not?”

Duffy answered: “I’m pretty sure on human timescales, those are minuscule effects.”

The questioning went on as Brooks argued the Antarctic ice sheet was actually growing. A recent study reported that the ice sheet had shrunk by 1,463km from 2010 to 2016.

Duffy disagreed, noting that “we have satellite records clearly documenting a shrinkage of the Antarctic ice sheet and an acceleration of that shrinkage” and citing “the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration” for his data.

The only real question in my mind is whether guys like Mo Brooks are really so incredibly stupid as to imagine any significant portion of sea level rise is coming from silt deposition, or whether they know they're talking crap, but figure the kind of voter they need to get reelected is stupid enough to fall for something that dumb. In the case of Brooks, I'm inclined to believe he's too smart and well-educated to believe something that obviously ridiculous himself -- although he has no science training, he graduated with highest honors from Duke and has a JD, so it's hard to believe he's the cretin he's playing on TV. It's probably just knowing BS, designed to appeal to the kind of conservative in 5th-district Alabama that Brooks is relying on to keep his gravy train rolling.

I would hope anyone in the US Congress isn't that stupid.

Well, you hope wrong. We have had some AMAZINGLY stupid people in Congress. There was a Democrat from Georgia who feared that if we stationed too many soldiers on the island of Guam, we might cause the entire island to tip over. We had the Republican Congressman from Georgia, Paul Broun, who served on the House Science Committee no less, who said that science "was LIES from the Pit of HELL!" We had a Congressman from Mississippi, I believe, who said that if "English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it ought to be good enough for everyone", when they were debating an English-only amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

There is no IQ test as a pre-requisite to serve in Congress.
