illegally crossing the border is an arrestable offense. we have been separating kids like this for a long long time.

Here ya go, in 2014 the UN called on us to stop separating kids at the border:

If it's been happening for a long time, I suppose that must mean it's the right thing to do. In fact, we need to actually increase the incidence of separating families, as has been done under the current administration. Since there is precedent, then it must be OK. What do entities like the ACLU know anyway? Let's just round up all of the illegals, leave their children here, and send them back where they came from. That will teach them not to try to invade our nation..... what? People who hire illegals? People who like the cheap labor? Oh, right. we can't deport them, as they're American citizens. What should we do about them?

Oh wait, I don't agree with the policy.

I think those who hire illegals and get caught should bear the brunt of the costs to deport.

I also think there should be an immigration status that covers kitchen workers, landscape workers etc where minimum wage is not required. If you still want to come here and do that job for that price, here is your permit.

No benefits, entitlements, etc. the status quo made legal.

I'm an open borders guys (legal immigration), should be pretty much unlimited but follow a process.

I'm not so sure an open borders policy would be best for the USA. We can only absorb just so many third world refugees, economic or political.

Here's what I'd do with the illegals: First, announce that a year from now there would be a total crackdown on hiring illegals. Moreover, they won't be eligible for any government services, including schools for their kids.

Then I'd announce that anyone here illegally could go back home, show that they had been working and paying taxes in the US, pass a background check for felonies, and be given a green card and a path to citizenship.

Then, if more workers are needed, let the employers decide on how many additional green cards can be issued.

That should slow the illegal immigration river to just a little brook.

Thats why it should be "legal open borders" when I say open borders, I am saying we should still have a merit weighted system, but if you want to come here, can prove you can care for yourself and not be a burden on the system you should NOT be refused, or even delayed allowed entry. "open borders" may be too strong a word.

I agree with the rest of your post and have said constantly that trumps wall is dumb, you do this, there is no need for a wall.

Not really, the 'birthright citizenship' ruling by SCOTUS will not stop women from running across the border and popping out the child, allowing them both to stay. Then the crying Schumer's (in both parties) will wail about uniting the families so the father (if known) and then other relatives can come in through chain migration. These people fill the welfare rolls.

I have. Just because there's a silly poem inscribed on it doesn't mean we are the home for everyone in the world who's unhappy.

I'm fine with anyone coming here through the legal channels. Walking across the border is not a legal channel.
Our immigration should be based on our needs not their wants. It's not 1900 any more. The population isn't 75 million any more.

Wherever you take them from, they breed faster and to a greater number. So the left, the compassionate bunch, believe the honourable and humane thing to do is to take more in. And guess what, they've breed even more back home. If governments and people weren't gullible in the first place, you would have the immigrants to lose in the first place but it's like flogging a dead horse.
They breed faster then we can take them. Not that we need them, want them or can realistically absorb them. WE have our own problems here at home. Most inner cities are a mess already, rural poor, inadequate schools and medical already over loaded, under funded. Now our big hearts want us to take in the world.

How many people coming in will be enough for you? We already have generous immigration, chain migration.

Yes we created a migration mentality. Just as we created an illegal immigration mentality. When they keep getting away with it, they will continue. Rewarding behavior.
