How Trump is killing America’s alliances
Trump’s betrayal of South Korea and trade spat with Justin Trudeau reveals the lasting damage he’s doing to the United States — and the world.

    By Zack Beauchamp

"Trump’s betrayal of South Korea and eruption at Trudeau are not one-offs, or events you can write off as simple quirks of the president’s personality. It is part of a broader slate of Trump policies and diplomatic efforts that have, put together, fundamentally weakened America’s ties with its traditional allies — in ways that could have potentially disastrous consequences for the world."
"And President Trump’s foreign policy could well be doing such damage. His approach is so erratic, so contemptuous of America’s traditional way of doing business, that US allies are openly worrying in a way that we haven’t seen in modern history. This affects world politics at their most fundamental level, undermining an otherwise stable global system in ways that we are only dimly capable of perceiving."
“An alliance may dissolve if its members begin to question whether their partners are genuinely committed to providing assistance,” Harvard scholar Stephen Walt writes in a 1997 survey of the historical record. “This problem will be more severe when ... there is a large asymmetry of power among the member-states.”

    ================================================== ==

The problem for the United States is that Trump does not properly stop to meet and confer with his staff of advisers on how best to handle a particular diplomatic situation. He simply shoots from the hip and that is what has gotten him into this mess. Now his staff is out actively trying to do some damage control but is it too late?

With all due respect...Bull Shit! Trump is making the USA a richer and more powerful nation. This is a very good thing.

With the Trump tariffs and keeping the elderly, the sick, the poor, the disabled, the middle class, women, children, minorities as second-class citizens and throwing them to the back of the bus? Also, without his lifting a finger to augment and save Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, America's Life-Line? Is that your idea of making the USA richer and more powerful? Take your blinders off already fella! And talk about BS, I'm sure glad I'm wearing my high boots today because it's getting pretty deep with your stuff.

None of EU, UK, Canada and Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs will be applied until, at earliest, July 1st.

    Then they all kick in.

    Happy Canada Day.

It's all so stupid... The West should be all working together, not squabbling amongst selves like this... If North America and Europe could stand together as a monolithic block, with Japan and South Korea and Australia and New Zealand for good measure, anything would be possible. As is... It's why humans have not been back to the moon back IMHO

I said it before, my dream - the West and all the ex-Soviet countries, all democratic and prosperous, all united in one transnational alliance.

But, it's a pipe dream, of course...

A pipe-dream, certainly, while Putin is around.

    I don’t think it’s a pipe dream.

But it seems a long way away.

Trump is making this country into an authoritarian regime that buddies up with other authoritarian regimes and dissociates it from the free world. Russia, China, North Korea ... all authoritarian regimes with no regard for human rights.

They are paranoid over there, all the republics... Don't trust anyone who is different from them... Nationalism everywhere, dumb, blind nationalism. That's why demagogue dictators like Putin, Lukashenko, Nazarbayev in Kazakhstan, etc, rise there and retain power, appealing to their people's most basic instincts... And don't get me started on the scum ruling Ukraine now...

And the conservatives here in the West are the same way. That's what shocks me. Trump's election campaign, the naked nationalism, xenophobia, racism, this was mirror image of Putin's first campaign, in 1999/2000. Seriously. Putin promised to crush the Chechens back then. Trump - ban the Mexicans and whatnot. Same shit. And same sort of people voted for Trump as the kind who backed Putin back then. Including most Russian emigrants in the US...

If you can find any difference at all between North Korean state media reporting on Kim, and Fox News reporting on Trump - I’ll eat my hat.

Im old enough to say that I remember when that would have been unthinkable. Unimaginable. As little as 20 years ago that would have been impossible to predict.

    Yet here we are.
