The tournament has not gone smoothly for ALL fans, it seems:

At least eight foreign World Cup fans have been detained or fined in the first days of the football tournament in Russia, with media reports naming nationals from Mexico, Iran, Peru and the United Kingdom among the suspects.

Russian authorities have beefed up security measures in the 11 cities hosting games this summer with an increased police presence in public areas and additional CCTV cameras.

The dubious milestone of being the first foreign visitor to land in a Russian jail during the World Cup was reportedly taken by a Peruvian fan in central Moscow. She was handed a two-month sentence on charges of pickpocketing 17,000 rubles ($265) from a Thai citizen on Red Square, Interfax reported Friday.

Another Peruvian fan was detained for allegedly stealing three Germany-Mexico tickets on Sunday, according to Interfax. The 42-year-old was said to have been charged with theft.

A spokesperson for the Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) prison watchdog said that its observers had located and spoken to three Mexican citizens and one Iranian being held in Moscow jail cells.

The Mexican citizen is suspected of stealing a bag with $8,000 inside, watchdog member and Dozhd TV news channel journalist Kogershin Sagiyeva reported Monday. The man was detained at a hotel after sharing some of the sum with two of his compatriots, who were also reportedly arrested.

“I took someone's bag at Domodedovo airport,” the man was cited as saying by the Moskovsky Komsomolets tabloid.

“I didn’t know there was so much money it it. I thought there was just a little,” he added.

The fan has reportedly complained to prison watchdog representatives over the poor condition of water and food in his jail cell.

In a separate incident, an Iranian citizen said he was falsely accused of stealing $1,000 by a Brazilian fan in Moscow.

Meanwhile, two British fans were charged with hooliganism and public drunkenness after they were taken off a train bound for Volgograd for England’s match against Tunisia on Monday. One was hospitalized after breaking the glass door of his train compartment, while the other refused to obey police orders while attempting to get out of the train.

The British Embassy in Moscow told The Moscow Times that it was in contact with the local authorities regarding the two fans.
Foreign World Cup Fans Jailed in Russia

As mentioned in a previous post, initial reports about the Englishmen arrested on the train to Volgograd have at least one fighting with police and even trying to grab a cop's sidearm from his holster. He is lucky he wasn't in America, probably would have got shot for that. As is, just got kicked the crap out of and thrown in jail

The Latino detainees in Moscow are having difficulties, I understand, jail staff there barely speak English, most of them, let alone Spanish...

Anyway also hours ago, police picked up Russian activists in central Moscow who were passing out English and Spanish leaflets to foreign fans, informing them about the plight of Oleg Sentsov and other political prisoners

Anyway, in happier news, here's some Croatian fans in Kaliningrad

The woman looks like the dragon queen from Game of Thrones lol Amazing.

    Also, Senegal beat Poland 2-1

    It's all over

Russia is on the brink of advancing to the second round of the FIFA World Cup following a 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday.

Russiaís win over Egypt means the host nation can advance to the second round of the tournament if Uruguay beats Saudi Arabia in Group A action on Wednesday. Even if the South Americans donít win, Russia looks well placed to move on to the knockout round.

Star striker Mohamed Salah was in the starting lineup after sitting out Egyptís opening game with a shoulder injury.

Egyptian captain Ahmed Fathiís own goal in the 47th minute gifted the lead to the Russians.

Denis Cheryshev doubled the hostsí advantage in the 59th minute, scoring his third goal of the tournament.

Artem Dzyuba made it 3-0 a few minutes later, essentially sealing the win.

Salah converted from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute.
Salah returns, but Russia defeats Egypt at World Cup

Wow! This is huge. Russia has not advanced to second round of a World Cup in decades, since the Soviet era!

Ahill, the oracle cat, who lives at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, where the match was played

correctly predicted that Russia will win, by eating out of the bowl with Russian flag

He is the most famous cat in the country now

Not bad for a kitty who is, BTW, deaf from birth (so, no, he didn't choose the howl under some verbal command lol)

    Ahill to another Hermitage cat

"Yeah, that's right, that's MY official WC ball! Go ahead, bitches, be jealous!"
