Whut "former size"? The borders that existed when Ghengis Khan was emperor?

Russia hasn't extended West to Germany since the birth of Christ.

This is gas. Transporting LNG is expensive, and you can't truck it. You need a source tied via pipeline. Russia is way closer. And gas via pipeline is way cheaper.

Depends. Kaliningrad was Germany (Prussia) once, so, techically, Russia extends to Germany even now

'To its former size' meant regaining the Eastern Bloc. Sorry, I should have been specific.

Opening the NATO summit in Brussels with a bang Wednesday, President Trump blasted Germany for a pipeline project that he said made Germany “totally controlled by Russia.”

“I think it’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we’re supposed to be guarding against Russia,” Mr. Trump said at a breakfast with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Europe plunged into energy crisis as Russia cuts off gas supply via Ukraine | Daily Mail Online

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.
You did a far better job of laying this out with the facts and history. I thought everyone knew this already happened. I must remember that I work in the energy industry and this is likely news to a lot of people.

I'm not sure if he was trying to insult Merkel, flatter Putin before their summit, or both...
Trump was projecting. He wanted to blame Germany for what he is guilty of, with regard to being "captive" to Russia and Putin.

One might be able to take a fair amount of what Trump blames or calls out others for as a means to distract from someone noticing or calling him out about his own actions, in a similar vein.

His summit with Putin should be quite interesting. I still think U.S. sanctions on Russia are something Trump is raring to do away with, but has not because to do so would just be too obvious, especially in light of how people have brought up his unusual coziness with regard to his referrals to Putin and Russia, when he pulls no punches when talking about other nations and leaders. Perhaps he believes Putin is like himself and is somehow going to make concessions if he is flattered. I don't know that much about Putin, but Trump's bragging about himself suggests he thinks he can outsmart anyone, but my guess is that Putin's prior career in the KGB means he is not likely to be fooled or out negotiated by the likes of Donald Trump and the more I see Trump in action, the more the rumored compromising position Trump is suggested to have found himself, in based on events during a visit to Russia might be true and the Stormy Daniels story indicates that Trump's propensity to cheat on every and any spouse he has is no secret and that luring him with a tryst with a Russian lady, while there, would not have been too difficult, nor would ensuring the "adventure" was filmed be difficult at all for a former KGB Lieutenant Colonel/

    KGB career

"In 1975, Putin joined the KGB and trained at the 401st KGB school in Okhta, Leningrad.[27][41] After training, he worked in the Second Chief Directorate (counter-intelligence), before he was transferred to the First Chief Directorate, where he monitored foreigners and consular officials in Leningrad.[27][42][43] From 1985 to 1990, he served in Dresden, East Germany,[44] using a cover identity as a translator.[45] Masha Gessen, a Russian-American who has authored a biography about Putin claims, "Putin and his colleagues were reduced mainly to collecting press clippings, thus contributing to the mountains of useless information produced by the KGB."[45] According to Putin's official biography, during the fall of the Berlin Wall that began on 9 November 1989, he burned KGB files to prevent demonstrators from obtaining them."[46]

"After the collapse of the Communist East German government, Putin returned to Leningrad in early 1990, where he worked for about three months with the International Affairs section of Leningrad State University, reporting to Vice-Rector Yuriy Molchanov.[43] There, he looked for new KGB recruits, watched the student body, and renewed his friendship with his former professor, Anatoly Sobchak, soon to be the Mayor of Leningrad.[47] Putin claims that he resigned with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 20 August 1991,[47] on the second day of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt against the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.[48] Putin said: "As soon as the coup began, I immediately decided which side I was on", although he also noted that the choice was hard because he had spent the best part of his life with "the organs".[49]

"In 1999, Putin described communism as "a blind alley, far away from the mainstream of civilization""

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Putin

No doubt Putin was/is well aware of history and what generally happened to those who worked for oppressive governments in certain capacities. It probably would not have served Putin well to express a lot of nostalgia for his days in the KGB, but there is a sense that his KGB training and career has helped him politically, from the standpoint of means and methods to keep his opponents at bay, propaganda and perhaps, as in Trump's adulterous case, gathering some heavy duty coercive dirt on all sorts of people that could prove useful for leverage.

Wait... wouldn't getting 'captured' by Putin be a good thing in Trump's mind?
