Number of Republicans who complained about falsely claiming a military background: 0.

Has nothing to do with whatever character Cohen is playing or the reasons for it.

Has everything to do with how he embarrassed politicians Republicans like.

So does any actor who portrays a service member. This argument falls flat in an instant.

What is that picture from? Who is he ostensibly portraying in it?

My comments on this thread aren't related to Palin. I lost interest in (and respect for) her when she stepped away from the governorship and decided to become a reality TV star and charicature of herself.

He's portraying a member of a foreign military in a publicly satirical, disrespectful fashion. Everyone knew at the time it was just an act. So was this.

I am curious what early endeavors of O'Keefe's you appreciated, but I'm far too polite to ask.

I guess I'll just have to wonder.

Can we have a show of hands from anyone here who called John McCain a traitor but thinks SBC doing this is disrespectful to our troops?

    Anyone?

I think the whole idea of stolen valor laws is a bad one. Existing law already provided a framework for punishing people who use fraud to unjustly enrich themselves. Why further enhance that for only one particular kind of fraud? For example, if someone begs for money while pretending to be a disabled veteran, why is the fact he pretended to be a veteran any worse than the fact he pretended to be disabled? Why would it be less of a problem to deceive people about being an ex-fire fighter, ex-FBI agent, ex-Congressman, or ex-priest?

Really think it would turn on the intent/attempt to deceive, but I'm hard-pressed to see how a government film to promote war bonds would subject an individual in such film to liability, even assuming the individual weren't actually in the military.
Well, in that case, we'd be talking about an intent to deceive. Picture, say, a WWII bond drive where the uniformed actor pleads for patriots to buy bonds so that his unit can go and beat Hitler. If the actor wasn't actually a soldier, the presentation of him as one would be deceptive. But it wouldn't be about unjustly enriching him, the way it would be if the same actor put on a uniform and got someone to donate to his cause as a disabled veteran when he wasn't one. I'd say the Cohen situation is more like the first example than the second, since it's playing a character rather than trying to deceive people to trick them out of money for his own benefit.
I'm unfamiliar with the Reagan story. Is there a link or source you can point me to to learn more about it? As described, it seems like it might qualify, as well.
    It's been pretty broadly covered:

Look, I would say just about everything up to making false statements about McCain's record is kosher. He's a public official, he invites such treatment by nature.

You can say things like "Where and how he served is irrelevant to what he does today, and he does not deserve respect today." I wouldn't agree, but it's legitimate.

However, if you've done what the president has done — suggested that it's McCain's fault he was captured, associated with people who claim McCain betrayed his fellows/didn't endure harsh treatment — you're obviously contemptible.

The same goes for anyone who enthusiastically supports the president with full knowledge of what he's said and done RE: McCain.

By comparison, if you say anything at all negative about the Khan family, or enthusiastically support those who have, other than "Respectfully, I don't agree," you're not worth the dust on Khazir's shoes.
