Since you manifestly do not like our Constitution, Jeremy, I think that perhaps you should move to some other country, and perhaps you could even find one without any constitution. States do NOT have the right to secede. There would be no Union at all if such a right were to be presumed. Try reading the Preamble to the Constitution sometime, too.

I have no problems with our constitution. However - it's the constitution of the United States - of which Virginia was no longer a part of.

Like I said, this isn't that complicated...

And there was nothing in the constitution about secession. Whether a state could secede or not was very much still an open legal question back then. It was actually northern states that threatened secession first...

Virginia voted to secede from the Union - at which point it was no longer part of the United States.

Then they should have put up a better fight. They were way too weak to win the war of secession.

Yet Virginia is still a US state. Go figure.

Whether they won or lost the civil war doesn't change the fact Virginia voted to secede from the Union.

Virginia has been part of the United States from 1788 until 2018, a period of 230 years. For four years of that period, from 1861 until 1865, the state of Virginia was in an unlawful rebellion against the duly elected government of the United States, a rebellion that had to be put down by military force, at great loss of life. The leaders of that rebellion, including men like Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, were traitors. Shrug. There's your history lesson for today, Jeremy.

In May of 1861 the Ordinance of Secession was approved by Virginia voters by a vote of 125,950 to 20,373. That means they left the United States and joined the confederacy.

    You're welcome.

Yeah they "rejoined" because they had no other choice.

And it doesn't mean that vote was legal. Were they going to lock up the 20000 who voted to remain but would be considered foreigners and/or illegals? Or forced to leave? And what percentage of the total adult population who would be forced to live under the confederacy, was the 125000?
    Thanks from BigLeRoy
