    Guaranteed Basic Income

The idea is building steam, from both the American Left, and the libertarian right, for different reasons. The proposal would essential pay every American citizen, outside of prison, and over the age of 21, a monthly lump sum as part of a guaranteed basic income, something around $10,000 or $12,000 a year.

The program would eliminate and replace all other non-healthcare, and non-social security welfare programs, including TANF, WIC, SNAP, SSI, Section 8 Housing vouchers, etc.

    Thoughts?

Even better, conservatives think, such a program could significantly reduce the size of our federal bureaucracy. It could take the place of welfare, food stamps, housing vouchers and hundreds of other programs, all at once: Hello, basic income; goodbye, H.U.D. Charles Murray of the conservative American Enterprise Institute has proposed a minimum income for just that reason — feed the poor, and starve the beast. “Give the money to the people,” Murray wrote in his book “In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State.” He suggested guaranteeing $10,000 a year to anyone meeting the following conditions: be American, be over 21, stay out of jail and — as he once quipped — “have a pulse.”

Well, its more or less a compromise position of course, for instance, the idea is a cousin of Friedman's concept of a negative income tax. One of the objections to the welfare state is the cycle of poverty that it seems to create, a negative income tax always creates incentives to produce more, there's no brightline where benefits or something gets cut off because its a sliding scale, of course here this is more along the concept of a guaranteed income which suggests a lump sum, thereafter you're on your own....Similar.....

Right. Friedman's negative income tax was a version of this kind of policy. The one that Switzerland is considering would be a straight citizen debit. It all comes down to the debate between if someone must be employed to receive the GBI, or not. I would say that the negative income tax is an incentive for businesses to pay employees low wages so the government will foot the bill on increasing their wage to the minimum. A straight GBI would facilitate a more natural capitalism. This way, a company could pay their employees closer to what they believe they are worth, yet employees will be there almost entirely by choice rather than need.

Not a bad concept as long as 10 thousand a yr is livable.

It would be returned to the Economy, keep crime down. People wanting a better life would get jobs and those who didnt wouldnt be a drain on tax payers.

throw in Universal Health Care and I am for it.

So when someone goes out and buys a big screen T.V. and some other toys, buys a bunch of drugs, than complains the following month that they can't feed their kids, are you going to cut them off?

Doubtful the democrats would do that.

Liberals don't know how to say no.

An experiment with the method, laid out in the link, proved to be successful.

I believe it will facilitate a new flood of people with the freedom to follow their aspirations. Now that their basic needs are paid for, they would be able to save for things like education, or other skilled training, making them more valuable in the workforce. Obviously, the GBI should not be too high. There is a limit where people simply choose not to better themselves since they make enough. No doubt, there may be a few that decide that 10,000 a year is all they will ever need, but most will want to make more than that.

Poor people don't know how to manage money though.

Kinda the reason they are poor to begin with.

Give em a bunch of cash and they will blow it and be back complaining for more tomorrow.
