Most People Don't Pay Much in Federal Income Tax

When the Republicans talk about tax reform all they mean is cutting taxes for the wealthy. The last thing we need right now is lower revenue.

Those of you who make under six figures and bitch about your taxes it's your state and local taxes that are out of control because they're regressive.

At least around here in town meetings, most people want their federal taxes lowered because they often claim they see nothing for it. Other taxes, property, school, income, sales etc is burdening many these days, but they are more likely to be okay with that because they see something in result. Teachers, roads, town/state projects, snow removal etc all comes out of those. But they yell about federal because they don't think they are doing anything. That's where we are. Poll after poll shows people want their federal taxes lowered. They think its too high a percentage, even when compared to other countries, since they get healthcare, retirement and college out of theirs.

Yeah, it would help if the Republicans would allow the federal government to work for the people.

Well that's part of the problem. People think the fed govt does nothing so they deny money so they cant do anything. Its just become another institution that Americans mistrust. Tax cuts are a big deal though, Bush pretty much got re-elected by giving people a mere $300. Doesn't take much.

What I thoroughly enjoy is when people complain about their tax dollars are going to pay others' social program[s] when we all are in debt to the federal government.

I wish they would recognize what vicious stupid circle that is.

I remember that. But at the time we had a projected surplus. What I don't get is how people can simultaneously complain about the debt but advocate for tax cuts.

I think that if we had instituted the Fair Tax, this would not be an issue. People pay - what almost 19 cents a gallon federal tax on gasoline (and maybe 30 cents a gallon in state taxes on average.) They pay over a dollar a pack federal tax on cigarettes and the federal government takes in over $10 BILLION DOLLARS a year off alcoholic beverages.

It's fashionable to look only at the income tax and make the false claim that people don't pay federal taxes. I'm paying $13 a month federal tax on gasoline just to drive to work and back. All my other driving is at least that much... and that is on one item! I've mentioned just a few things we pay federal taxes on. So, the federal income tax is just an unnecessary burden aimed at stealing money.

The US collects around 26% of GDP in taxes, the lowest of all the industrialized nations. In fact we are at the edge of third world as far as social programs and wealth inequality are concerned.

The point of the OP is that the kind of tax reform Republicans are talking about, of federal income taxes, will only reduce taxes for the wealthy.
