It is obvious that some in this thread have never read anything about the Fair Tax and are posting from utter ignorance. It is not a regressive tax that will hurt the poor. The funniest thing is that some will continue to argue that it does without even looking at the Fair Tax.

The biggest knock against the Fair Tax is that it will hurt lower incomes. That's why the prebate needs to be increased to offset the tax hit on consumption.

How high should the probate be? Until 50% are paying no federal income tax?

The amounts should be doubled at least. The idea is to make it worthwhile for lower incomes to support the proposal. The goal is for everyone to maximize take home pay. If that means compromising by increasing the amount of the prebate, why not do it.

If they okay doubling it, that won't be enough the left will want triple. Let's face it, we're a welfare state. When austerity measure finally have to be imposed because our national debt reaches a point that we just can't print money to get out of the mess, they'll see.

That may be the case, but what critics will not be able to do is it say it hurts the poor. The increased prebate will speak to that. Idealistically, the debate than becomes how much the amount should be.

The critics will always say that hurts the poor. When Jerome buys his rims for his Chrysler he'll have to pay. When Vern buys his new shotgun he's going to pay. Keep in mind they've paid zero federal income tax or less for years.

Strange comment, given we've had direct reference to empirical research showing that it is indeed regressive

Of course you have empirical research or evidence. You live in empirical worlds. Let's be honest here. You only want to fuck the rich, right? Raise taxes on those who are too successful. Punish those greedy sons of bitches for actually having the gall to make more money than others. You'll do it with the cry that it's not fair.

So the evidence says it is regressive and, proving your comment wrong, you've gone into a foul mouthed rant? Figures
Thanks from labrea and Ian Jeffrey
