Canada vows to fight back if hit with Trump’s tariffs

All-out trade war: Canada vows to fight back if hit with Trump's tariffs | Financial Post

Canada is vowing to retaliate if U.S. President Donald Trump makes good on his pledge to impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum producers — while holding out hope that it could be exempt.
Trump said he intends to slap a 25 per cent duty on steel imports and 10 per cent on aluminum in order to protect the national industry, though details remain unclear. His words sent U.S.-based producers rallying but could hurt companies that ship steel and aluminum from Canada, including Rio Tinto Group and Stelco Holdings Inc., without an exemption.

“The President has just initiated an all-out trade war,” said Jean Simard, chief executive officer of the Aluminum Association of Canada. Aside from the direct impact on the countries affected, Europe will need to protect itself from a flood of redirected metal because the U.S. is not an open market anymore, he said.
    ..snip..

meh.. no specifics on how Canada will retaliate.
Anyhoo trump declaring a trade war on our closest ally is not very neighborly.

I guess if those tarriffs were levied on a NAFTA country then Ottawa’s only choice would be to walk away from the current NAFTA negotiation. It clearly wouldnt be worth the paper it’s written on at that point.

You know Canada would be smart to walk away from NAFTA. Canada currently runs a deficit with the States. Trump thinks that is not the case. The man doesn't believe his own economic advisors. Canada has had to taken the US to WTO far more often than the other way round. If anything it shows the deal was not working for Canada. I understand they already have trade agreements with many countries and have a lot of trade agreements in negotiations.

Finally people are starting to see that these agreements are absurd and unsustainable.

I don't think Trump will be bothered about the Canadian steel industry getting all huffy.

Canada-US NAFTA is a lot larger and far more important that Trump's tiny tariffs. The global market will even out Trump's tariffs. Trudeau and Trump will not pay...the Canadian and US consumer will.
