The state where pay is rising the fastest

Wages and salaries are going up, at least for most Americans.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released a report last week that shows which states had the highest wage growth in 2017.

Idaho is booming with jobs and earnings growth, buoyed by sectors like computer-parts manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and construction, reports The Wall Street Journal. The Great Potato state saw a 5.3% increase in earnings — comprised mainly of annual wages and salaries — in 2017 from the year before, outpacing earnings nationally, which grew at 3.1%.

Jan Roser an economist with the Idaho Department of Labor says there are good jobs all across the state, too. “It appears durable manufacturing was the main source behind that,” said Roser. “We do have pockets of durable manufacturing all over our state, and certain we have a high concentration, maybe not as high as was before the recession, of computer and electronic product manufacturing.”

    Good for Idaho.

The Wall Street Journal points out that Idaho's low unemployment rate of 3.0% helped boost its wage growth. The state also has a low per capita income — 44th in the nation — that allows for higher growth. A relatively small population — Idaho has about 1.8 million residents — may also be a contributing factor.

More good news. It's been a long and steady recovery since the great recession.

I think I read someplace that the western part of Idaho is, economically, basically an extension of the state of Washington.

Boise is an oasis in Idaho and that is likely where the growth is occurring. Small town Idaho is mainly agrarian, not much going on unless they have a university. Idaho also has a large Mormon population, Mormons work their tails off.

I almost moved to Boise at one point during my career with Hewlett-Packard. I'm not sure how many employees HP has today in Boise. I know there are at least some.

I would have guessed North Dakota.

    Good going, Idaho!

    Heh!

That would have been a terrible guess. ND came in last on the list with -1.9% wage growth.
